Before the match

Hi, i've been given captaincy this year and i was wondering do we know any fun more enjoyable fielding drills we can do before the game. I got voted captain by my u15 team \s they see me as being fun and a comeidan..... but before the games i don't want to do long, boring ******** the ball as hard at people as i can and hit it in the air until it has snow on it..... just fun things

Re: Before the match

Fielding doesn't ever go in a sentence with fun :p

I'm not sure, try King, maybe, that's all I can think of. Just like in a line normal catching practice but if you drop it you go to the back and the person at the front at the end is the "King".

Re: Before the match

No Way  Fielding can be great fun!!!

Any fielding drill you can think of can be made interesting by adding an element of competition. We're all involved in sport so we all have a competitive streak. Just make 2 teams and some form of scoring system. There's a load of good drills on Harrowdrive that can be made competitive - the scoring system doesn't even have to make sense, just tell people there's a chance of winning or losing and watch them perk up!

Re: Before the match

You can do the easy ones like this:

Set of stumps in the middle, split players into two teams. The idea is to hit the stumps, one point for a successful hit. After they have thrown they run to the other side, and join the back of the opposite queue.

Good as it gets people jogging, as well as target practice and fielding (picking up the opposition throws). Plus it's simple to set up.

Also, have a look at this -Session plans. Though aimed at younger kids, many of the games can be adapted to fit your needs. Anyway, most of them are simple to set up and they can be fun with a bit of a competitive edge to them.

Re: Before the match

any fielding drill b4 the game is fun IF everyone is having fun.... light hearted joking and general chat makes any fielding drill b4 a game fun..... also settles nerves

worked for our team.. hope it helps :)

Re: Before the match

Pre match routine can be fun and depending on the level of cricketers and league you are playing in, it should be geared towards preparing for the game.

Most pro's play football/rugby in pre-warm-up??? Because it's fun and gets them moving. Rugby is ideal, as it's a catching game. You can then progress onto basic fielding drills using 2 balls and 1 stump to start. Hit the ball to 1 group who catch/field the ball and throw at the stump, the other group back-up the ball and throw to keeper, nice and easy. There are loads of drills out there, so research the web.

Good luck with the season and enjoy captaincy.

Re: Before the match

Teams play soccer, rugby or touch footy anything to get players running.... than after that few throw downs and when fielding some catching, bowlers bowling to the wicket keeper... it all depends on yourself, or the kids if they take there cricket seriouse if not u can do it in small porpotion and not over do it

Re: Before the match

Underarm hockey. Split into 2 teams (we do Bowlers vs Batsmen) Mark out a pitch about 15mx10m with 1 stump at each end. All throws mus be underarm and below head height. You cannot run with the ball (allow a couple of recovery steps if ball is caught while running). Any dropped cathes are a turn over to the other team. Aim is to score by hitting the stump.

Simple yet efective, gets the heart pumping, gets you throwing the ball, catching the ball, increasing you spatial awareness, gets people minds ready to play, and most importantly it is fun and relaxes you before the game.

Re: Before the match

We do this at training - I found it through harrowdrive last year on a site where it was called "Stumpball". Great fun - and I like the rule of no throws above head height ... that was usually what it degenerated into - long balls and stump-hangers.

that seems like an awesome warm up...similar to ultimate frisbee but practical to cricket!
