Bike Riding

Re: Bike Riding

Cool. I think I'll train all on-road because the whole trip is on-road. I think I'll aim to do about 5 miles a day for a few days, then 10 and then maybe a bit more and leave it at that per day.

Re: Bike Riding

 yeah, how could I?

Where I live practically everything is a hill or some sort or another so just cycling the back roads should be good training. Nearer the time I might try some focused hill climbing as there's a fairly steep hill fairly close to where I live that I could go up and down loads.

Re: Bike Riding

Sarcasm? !! :eek:hmy:

A bit strong...

I prefer wit...

...but then, people of my age often think we are wittier than we actually are :p

Re: Bike Riding

 I think most people think that, Liz

*mod face* - back on topic now please everyone!!

:p

I don't know... you give some people a little bit of power and they think they can conquer the World

Re: Bike Riding

There are things such as saddle soreness that could be an issue, so good padded cycling shorts, a gel seat need to be a priority. Also you need a decent bike with gears eg mountain bike with slick tyres or a road racing bike.

As regards training increase the miles slowly. Much of the training should be in the aerobic range. A heart rate monitor would help. Also as Liz says once to twice a week you have to train for hills, once a week threshold/lactate training i.e. the speed you can maintain for an hour that is faster than your usual slower days. At the weekend you can add one long bike ride eg starting at 1 hour and gradually increasing to 3 to 4 hours if you have the time. The latter will get you used to staying on your bike for long hours

Re: Bike Riding

At the moment I havn't had time to train due to revision and being ill, followed by knackering my knee. To be honest, I won't have time to take more than about an hour off at a time up until the week before I go because that's when my exams finish. I've got a fairly old mountain bike with a slightly squint front wheel but my friend's mum might have one I can borrow. We'll see how it goes but at the moment it's not looking too promising.

Re: Bike Riding

a few hours in the sadle will cure any saddle sore! as for Gel Seats! well they are more of a hindrence than comfort!

Its like GYM bikes? whats the deal with them! the seats are so uncomfortable and you can do any mileage on them!

Re: Bike Riding

Depends on what benefits.

At 120 lbs, 30 mins of:

cycling 10-11.9 mph expends approximately 163 calories.

running 10 mph (6 min mile) expends approximately 435 calories.

Being low impact, cycling is easier on the joints.

The main muscle groups used in cycling are, from the "bottom, up": Tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, soleus, quadriceps group, hamstring group, gluteal group, quadratis lumborum and associated muscles, erector spinaeus and associated muscles. There are also loads placed on the muscles of the shoulder, upper arm and neck. The former muscle groups are generally those concentrated on in road cyclists engaged in weight trainig regimes. Other branches of the sport, like track sprinting, often place emphasis on a broader range of muscles. It is worth bearing in mind that all the muscle groups that are required to support the activity of those most closely involved in pedalling need to be trained - so the abdominals, for example, should not be ignored in any weight training regime. Many runners find that a limiting factor in sprinting, for example, is not leg strength, but abdominal and lower back strength.

Re: Bike Riding

I Love my bike riding, i try to get out a few times a week. sometimes i cycle to and from work, (4 miles each way) or i go out when i get in from work and do a 10 mile circuit which takes an hour of mixed riding, on and off road! (including a gravle pit with a few drops)

as i'm a wicket keeper i find it really helps the old legs! and i love riding anyway!

Re: Bike Riding

A bike is roughly 5 times more efficient than walking. So in effect you have to ride 5 times longer to get the same workout. How I know that? I had to write an essay on bikes for physics.
Also I have heard that it works different muscles than running (which is the challenge of the triathlon). But I'm in the same boat as you Jonesy. I really like riding my bike, much more than running, so I'm also interested in its advantages, if any, for cricket.

Re: Bike Riding

Well of course I do, I was just wondering if I could do it instead of running. I really hate running...

Re: Bike Riding

i ride alot, but feel i should start running, its just so boring!

where as on my bike atleast i can ride up over or off of stuff!
