Black Caps Contracts

I am really annoyed with the blackcaps selectors at the moment.

They have left out James Franklyn who was NZ's best ODI batsmen last year averaging over 50 in ODI's. I am a big fan of James and he is NZ's version of Shane Watson, a beautiful timer of the ball and a handy batsmen.

Jacob Oram keeps his contract how???????? He played maybe 3 games last year and missed about a million!!!!!!

New Zealand contracted players: Hamish Bennett, Trent Boult, Neil Broom, Daniel Flynn, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Andy McKay, Kyle Mills, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Luke Woodcock, Reece Young

Franklin absolutely robbed, his axing is Katich-esque. Broom and Flynn getting contracts is pretty skeptical also.

Surprised that Jeetan Patel was dropped too, I thought a second pure-spinner would be required but looks like he is not.

I'm okay with the inclusion of Broom and Flynn but I can't understand giving Oram and Woodcock a contract, I feel really sorry for Franklyn. A rubbish decision, this decision has probably wrecked his career as black cap because last year he gave up his county contract for playing with the blackcaps. They drop him just as soon he was turning into a Watson type player ie gaining confidence. A beautiful timer of the ball and I would play him in Tests, ODI's and T20's because he is versatile. Poor Franklyn, and pure New Zealand cricket. You messed up big time here :(

Nathan McCullum and Luke Woodcock are our back up spinners

Risky decision having only one specialist spinner in Vettori. Woodcock and McCullum are more all-rounder types so that will be okay for one-day cricket but when it comes to a test match on a turning wicket who becomes the additional spinner? Same theory applies for when Vettori is rested or gets injured, there's no real back-up and there's no-one to fill the role.

Oram would play mostly one-day cricket you'd think, pretty handy all-rounder when he isn't breaking down with injury all the time. He's is a similar position to where Watson was with his injury run, something will have to give, whether that be slowing his bowling down, changing his action or giving it up altogether.

I think there is a bit more to this. James Franklin definitely is unlucky as potentially he is the most improved New Zealand player in the last 18 months. If I look at that list of contract players it is obvious that the idea is to invest in youth for the future. Franklin for me is what New Zealand cricket is about. He is a street fighter and all be it, not the most pretty in terms of technique but he is effective.

The truth is that New Zealand cricket has a problem brewing. It is run on the playing side by somewhat of an old boys club. Justin Vaughan, Mark Greatbatch and John Wright. I would suspect that Franklin is not what Greatbatch & Wright's cup of tea. Remember how Wright tried to end senior Indian players' career when he was in charge ..you cannot suddenly go the youth route instead it should be a gradual process. Personalities in general tend to cloud proper judgement.

it is a sad state of affairs for New Zealand supporters. I suspect that Franklin if not given any international appearances will play in England and Australia in the T20 formats.
