Bowling faster

Re: Bowling faster

Remember the 4 week bodyweight training plan Liz mentioned earlier in this post too. There are squlliions of bodyweight exercises if you have no equipment.

PS. NOWHERE to do chin ups? Have all the trees round you had their low branches cut off ;)

Re: Bowling faster

Lol, there are only a few trees around me with branches stable enough for chin ups and the ones that are go almost vertically up.

I will try with the thigs you said, Liz, but I am going away for a while so I will have to make do with the things there.

Catchya, in the new year or just before, have a good Christmas and New Year, thanks for the help, cheers.

Re: Bowling faster

How should I improve my general running fitness, like how long should I jog/sprint for, how often. I'm probably struggling at the moment. TBH I'm pretty weak. I'm one of the the weakest guys in my grade. I don't know if I am keeping my back straight when I'm doing push ups, I don't think I am. Is there any way to make sure I am? I can't really do many chin ups and I wouldn't be able to run for too long. I'm kinda skinny, but not super skinny, I have hardly any muscle, but I am far from obese or overweight.

Re: Bowling faster

Hi, I am assuming that you have no equipment available to you and no access to any cardiovascular machines but please let me know if his is incorrect Lachlan.

It sounds as if you are not very fit at all, if this is the case, you must start gradually. To give me some idea of where you are:

How long can you jog, comfortably, without stopping now? 30mins? 45mins?
How far can you sprint? 50m? 100m? 150?

'Weak' in what respect?
For instance, What can the other guys in your grade do that you cannot?

This is very hard for me to answer without a video. Is there somebody at home who could check this out for you?

Firstly, make sure your body is correctly aligned; shoulders, hips, knees and ankles all in a straight line and not rotated anywhere.

Brace your core to support your spine.

Retract and depress your shoulder blades [push them back and lower them down your spine].

Make sure your neck is straight; it should be an extension of the spine [not flexed or extended]. You should be looking at the floor!

Push yourself up through your arms, whilst keeping your hips always in line. In other words, the body should move up and down like a plank with no movement between the head and toes.

Remember: One good press up is better than five poor ones!

Do not worry about not being able to do too many chin ups. If you can do one, you have something to build on. Just keep doing them and you will notice the difference.

As for skinny, are you able to post your height in kms and weight in kgs? It just gives me some idea of what we are talking about here.

Re: Bowling faster

Umm, I don't really go for jogs, it kinda bores me in a way. I will go for a few when the weather gets cooler (hopefully tomorrow). Weak as in, I'm probably the 3rd or 4th easiest guy in the grade to deck, I don't punch as hard, don't have as big bicep girth...

Height is about 166 last time i got measured which was a month or 2 ago, and weight is about 55.

Re: Bowling faster

OK, firstly... I can't believe I asked for your height in kms  too much merriment, me thinks. Anyway, just proves nobody takes any notice of me

You are not worryingly slight and can manage with that at your age but I would like to see you starting to put on a little muscle. The bodyweight programme will certainly do that for you and in the best way possible... slowly ;)

Interesting! So this is the way you guys test your fitness in your part of the world. There are easier ways you know :D

I am a great believer in non contact boxing at your age [any age really]; it's great for agility, balance, coordination and speed [teaches you how to punch too ;)] See if you can source out a club in your area. I like teaching guys to box with a combination of karate, kung fu, tae kwondo and tai chi; if you can find somebody like me, you might get them to take you on free of charge.

Jogging is not terribly functional for cricket but I am interested in your aerobic fitness. Go for a jog sometime and let me know how you get on.

Re: Bowling faster

Haha yeh I was about to answer 0.166 :p

Yeah well we only did the bicep girth in maths for some data, and decking and punching is just common.

I went for a jog today, I jogged for about 5 minutes up and down hills then 2 minutes or so around a pretty flat park but halfway through the lap I got sharp pains just below my knee and I couldn't run properly. 15 minutes later on my way home I sprinted 100 metres or so, I don't know exactly but it would of been around that, maybe 70-80 pretty comfortably.

Re: Bowling faster

Nothing to worry about here, sounds good. :D

Try not to 'bounce' whilst running, you need to keep the movements controlled to prevent injury and conserve energy. Cricketers waste far too much energy in their run up and whilst running the wicket through poor running technique. As you can imagine, this has huge negative affects on their performance.

As I mentioned previously, jogging is not terribly functional for cricket so next time you go out try the session posted on http://www.simplycricket.net/general-level-of-fitnessfrom-home-t580.0.html by me on December 17, 2007, 02:56:56 PM

Re: Bowling faster

It is pretty hard to go out for a run here, the days have been sooo hot, 41 today, 40 tomorrow, I think Saturday will be better so I will try to go out then, but I have had no opportunity lately.

Re: Bowling faster

Went for first training in a few weeks. I felt I bowled pretty fast, and that I might not be bowling that slow after all. I will ask my coach next week whether I am bowling at a good pace.

Re: Bowling faster

I bowled for an hour non stop, and was the only one bowling so I had no rest between balls except the occasional chat with my coach, and I was bowling fast-ish, so I think all that is under control. I think I just need to work on running between wickets so I might go for a few sprints.
