Boycott Fosters Group products!!!

I can't believe this!!!!
TO MANY, a beer at the cricket is one of summer's simple pleasures. But in the case of Allan Border, a conflict between his personal beer sponsor and that of Cricket Australia appears to have been the driving force in his decision yesterday to stand down from his role as a national selector.

The former Test captain recently fronted advertisements for XXXX Gold, owned by Lion Nathan, which is sponsoring beach cricket this summer in Sydney, the Gold Coast and Perth. Border will represent Australia in the tournament, alongside greats such as Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson and Dean Jones.

That, however, does not impress Foster's, a major sponsor of cricket. It recently announced a new deal with Cricket Australia, in which it would no longer be the naming rights sponsor of the triangular one-day series, but increase its commercial involvement at grassroots level.

Geoff Donohue, corporate affairs spokesman for Foster's, said the XXXX campaign involving Border was little more than ambush marketing.

"We think ambush marketing is fairly un-Australian," he said. "I will leave you to decide whether what they are doing with their current advertising campaigns is ambush marketing.

"I guess Allan has [resigned as a national selector] in pursuit of his own commercial interests. But we are thrilled with our association with Cricket Australia and the Australian cricket team, and we're more than happy with the access we have to the current players."

Just who do Fosters think they are to be able to dictate to Cricket Australia who the Chairman of Selectors is going to be? Even Kerry Packer never tried this stunt!!!

Spread the news, and boycott their beers (which are fairly average anyway!) Corporate Australia has no place in the running of Australian cricket. I am spewing.

Re: Boycott Fosters Group products!!!

what i don't understand is how is this considered "ambush marketing"???

ambush marketing is like what Dutch beer company Bavaria did during the soccer/football World Cup- since they were not official sponsors of the WC, a way to get promotion connect to the WC they gave bright orange lederhosen to all the dutch supporters for one of their matches (it had "Bavaria Beer' on it).
Budweiser paid big bucks to be the beer sponsor, and no surprise that when the found out they flipped out.
so what did they do? they had security force all the men to remove them and put them in the bin, while the females got to keep theirs on. yep! thats right, some were in their underwear during the match!
i found this on it -
"At the 2006 Football Word Cup, Dutch brewer, Bavaria, gave away garish orange lederhosen displaying its name to hundreds of Dutch supporters attending the match against the Ivory Coast. Budweiser was the official beer. Stewards at the match ordered the fans to remove the garments before letting them in."

that link gives a great history of past 'ambush marketing' over the years.

Re: Boycott Fosters Group products!!!

This whole business about protecting official sponsors has been taken too far in the past, I think. Within the limits of human decency, spectators have the right to wear whatever the hell they want to wear.

A Dutch friend of mine told me that after that happened, the company gave out collapsible orange hats to fans, so that when the fans came into the stadium they would look just like ordinary hats, but then the hats would pull the tops out and they would say "Bavaria" on them.

Re: Boycott Fosters Group products!!!

The choice of beer in Australia, on a state-by-state basis, especially, is just as provincial as a lot of things are in this country -- including stating preference for sporting codes.

Notice from the article cited that XXXX Gold/Lion Nathan aren't sponsoring beach cricket in Victoria? That's because CUB products are king here.

But as far as the article is concerned, it remains to be seen if Border's resignation as chairman of selectors is related to the beer sponsor row -- and from what it looks like, the two events appear to be mutually exclusive.
