Re: BS things about todays cricket

One obstacle to eliminating dead-rubber matches is that every match in a Test series, and often every match in an ODI series, is played at a different venue. It is important that the administrators make sure each international venue gets its fair share of the action. In a playoff series in American sports, it's true that they don't continue playing once the series has been decided, but since the venues involved are just the two home fields of the teams involved, the venue doesn't make as much of a difference.

I think it would be possible to avoid playing dead rubbers in cricket, but it would require us to think about scheduling matches in a completely different way. Organizers would have to make sure the biggest venues hosted the "live" Tests in the biggest series (i.e., the first three Ashes Tests), and the rest of the venues would have to be on a rotation, so that, say, if a series is decided before a scheduled Test in Sydney can be played, the next series begins in Sydney.

I actually think one of the benefits of eliminating dead-rubber Tests would be making series longer, rather than shorter. Almost every Test series Sri Lanka plays is only a two-Test series, which I don't think is long enough, because sometimes you have a very competitive series tied at 1-1 after two Tests, and there's no decider. At the same time, it would be difficult to schedule every series for at least three Tests or more because of player burnout. So, organizers might be able to schedule longer series knowing that some of them would end early as a result of being already decided.

Re: BS things about todays cricket

"Try scoring 9 runs an over on the leg-side with 5 fielders and with Brett Lee bowling at 155km/hr down the leg-side. Not so easy is it?"

For the rabbits, maybe (though they'd be quite happy with all the leg byes
they'll get, not to say byes, without having to worry about losing their wickets). Try bowling that way to Richards,
Haynes, Lloyd, etc.

Re: BS things about todays cricket

I believe I speak for everyone when I say you have already lost that argument, timmyj51. Bottom line, it doesn't matter who the batsmen are; if bowling down the leg side is encouraged, the run rate will drop.

Perhaps we could turn our attention to discussing the dead rubbers?

You've got no idea mate.

The runs won't flow as easily as you think they will no matter who the batsmen is. And we are talking about the present not when Lloyd, Richards and Haynes were playing.

Re: BS things about todays cricket

Next one.

I forget what number we are up to.

But I hate it when people compare todays cricket to the past cricket. Timmy this isn't pointed at you so don't take it seriously. However, there are a lot of people who are criticising the team and comparing them to the Aussie line up 20 years ago. Different team back then.

Is this cricket's equivalent of Roy Keane's prawn sandwiches? I thought it was supposed to be cucumber sandwiches for cricket? Or is it substituted with Vegemite spread toasts/sandwiches down in Australia?

Can I safely say Pidgeon Fan that you werent around 31 years ago? So how can you compare and make a justified and accurate assesment that cricket was better today then it was then?

It is like comparing the batsman from yester-year to todays. It is just impossible.

Some of the most entertaining innings were played in the 70s, the World Series of cricket had just taken off, World Cups were just beginning, there were some of the games greats playing in the era (Sobers, Lillie, Chappel etc). I wasnt around but I have read articles, watched videos and I will say that 31 years ago it was just as good as it is today.

Do you actually watch cricket or do you just make ridiculous comments without even seeing a game?

Re: BS things about todays cricket

okay...this topic is going nowhere!

A BS thing about today's cricket: the glove punch!

- glove punch on the way out towards the middle of the ground
- dot ball, batsman get together and...GLOVE PUNCH!
- shot for four and...GLOVE PUNCH!
- big windy whoosh by batsman from ball outside off stump...GLOVE PUNCH
- batsmen just make it back into the crease after a risky run or two...GLOVE PUNCH!

does this just not drive you bonkers?

Flashback: Centenary Test, 1977, Australia vs Pommies. Randall pulls, hooks,
Lillee to the boundary. Fans go crazy. Fast forward: Sesquicentenary
Test, 2027: Wus "no ball", "wide ball" bowling. Wus "shoulder arms"
batting. Church ladies, mamas boys, 40-year-old virgins watch while
sipping tomato soap.

Re: BS things about todays cricket

I nominate this thread to be the "thread of BigCricket collectibles". It sure has a lot of classic content in it.

:D

I have seen replays of plenty of test matches, Guru. I wasn't even born then. I am 29 now but have seen plenty of replays and still think that today's cricket it better than the cricket played 31 years ago. You only have to look at the cricketers these days to find that they all have a better lifestyle than they did in the past.

I'm probaby gonna get another warning off a mod, but PF, if you dont mind me asking, what do you do for a living, you are 29 years old and you spend over 12 hours a day on computer forums and myspace. And before you get into the "Yes but you have nearly 4000 posts on here bla bla bla" yes but I do this in the summer to kill time on 40 degree days during "SCHOOL HOLIDAYS". Just throwing out a question, not bait.
