Cricket a gentlemas game??

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

Yeah I think cricket is not a gentlemans game. There are few gentle men left in the game these days. It is all because of sledging.

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

No, i think it is more to do with the professional air about the game nowadays. People play for money nowadays, not always for the enjoyment of the sport. Sledging has always been around, just in different forms, its the money that has turned the game away from what it was origionally conceived to be

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

Jimmy has pretty much nailed it, i think. More money = more at stake = more pressure to win. Tempers are going to fray from time to time but a string governing body should keep it to a minimum - I wonder what the ICC will do?

There has always been sledging around etc but these days there is so much media intrusions almost action is picked up and poured over.

In what respect do you feel that it's no longer a gentleman's game, Kizza?
becuz there is hatred in the game players don care about the other team they sledge they fight they bowl bouncers and beamers its no longer a gentlemas game

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

i couldnt agree with jimmy more.... the cricketers nowadays are playing cricket as a full time career... they train hard throughout the weeks and get a cheerful check at the end of the season.... it is more competitive as ALOT more is at stake...

i dont kno if i would say there is hatred so much between the players... fair enough in some obvious cases but in the broad spectrum i disagree that players hate eachother... if players didnt care for eachother at all.. how come they check on the batsmen if he is hit in the head with a bouncer (langer v ntini)....... as for sledging and bouncers..... any spectator that doesnt believe a little fire in the game makes it interesting should take another long hard think about it...

thats all for my rant ;):D

Like AUSSIE BOY said. I don't believe there is hatred between players, the Herbhajan/Symonds incident was an isolated one. Sledging has been around since the dawn of cricket, just in different forms and as for bouncers, again like AUSSIE BOY said, most bowlers check they haven't hurt their opposition if they get hit. And with beamers, you only have to look back to Bodyline, a time when the game was well and truly a gentlemens game. And in the last year, on Australian shores, there has only been one beamer, and that was accidental. Its not not a gentlemans game not because of physical things on field but rather numbers off the field

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

Why is it all related to money? Sachin Tendulkar most likely the highest earning cricketer and the most successful ODI batsman is a gentleman. He doesnt behave poorly on or off the field just because he gets paid huge sums of money.

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

sachin has a decent manner on the field hes not aggresive
id give him the title of one of the few gentlemens left in the game

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

Sachin Tendulkar you would have to say is just a freak! How can you bat that well and be so modest. ::)

And its not all players, or even most players, but it is the game at large that isn't gentlemanly.

Re: cricket a gentlemas game??

Should sport be gentlemanly though? As long as you can shake hands after the event, what happens on the pitch should be mostly irrelevant?

Of course there are boundaries which are sometimes overstepped but mostly, I think that players just play hard but are still able to enjoy the company of the other team afterwards.

Re: Cricket a gentlemas game??

the gentleman title in cricket is more about sportsmanship than anything else. For instance, during the west indies vs england tests
kevin pietersen & chris gayle started a bit of banter. In the end they shook hands for the entertaning competition. which shows the amount of sportsmanship between the two. this is an example of gentlemanship even in the stressful times
