Cricket Photo's

I'm a photographer by trade so I can take a pretty decent photograph and my team have asked me to shoot images of them over the coming summer - what do you reckon are classic cricket shots - the type of photo you'd like to have on your clubs wall or for yourself and if someone was to get such a shot would you be tempted to part with your hard earned money?

Re: Cricket Photo's

I took a photo of the opening bowler who was batting at 10 or 11 playing a classical forward defensive, he was chuffed with it.

In the same match The captain skied the ball and was caught for a duck which I also got a photo of, he was less chuffed.

Personally I like a photo of a diving catch, but since you'll probably be fielding I'd go for a cover drive.

Re: Cricket Photo's

The classic is getting the bowler during his delivery stride (side and front on). Also, any shot of a batsman being bowled and the stump flying back is also a good one.

Pretty much any diving/sliding in the field is popular as well.

It's the old problem of trying to photograph sport though, you'll wait all day for that exciting moment then miss it!

Yeh, dad is into this, he borrowed a 420ml lens and missed the moment where the keeper had knocked the ball into the air and was about to catch it on his second attempt, woulda been a class photo.

But yeh, cover drive would be great, because you probably can't take photos while fielding (well you could try :p )

Re: Cricket Photo's

Any shot with a bit of anger i reckon is fantastic to see. Thats why i think Gilly has such great photographs to use in signatures etc.

Another good person to photograph is Lee, hes perfect in delivery stride. I'd happily pay for a photo along those lines. Obviously i know you're not photographing real international players, but i thought it'd be easier to explain that way :)

Now, something like this is great:

Aye, thats a great photo, i noticed it on BBC earlier and it's a great picture. The photo of Freddie and Brett Lee from 2005 Ashes is a hell of a picture aswell, would love a blown up, signed and framed picture of that moment.

Re: Cricket Photo's

Just reiterating really, as a bowler best shots would be delivery stride, during delivery, taking a wicket (ie stumps all over the shop) with followthrough in BG or with the batsman jumping around to aviod a bouncer.

Batting, just any good shot but esp drives or cuts I think. Cuts have a nice dollop of aggression thrown in and drives are very classical.

Good luck with it, I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

Re: Cricket Photo's

I think the other side of the coin is to try to catch the more unusual moments, such as fielders looking pissed off at dropping a dolly, club house scenes, team dynamics - stuff that might not mean much to the casual observer but would mean a lot to your club.

Re: Cricket Photo's

They've got some great images at Getty images. I think the easiest to take would be a bowler about to deliver from his runup or a batsman in his stance because you can be prepared for it. To get a shot of a batsmen getting bowled or a perfect cover drive might need you to wait for hours unless you get the players to deliberately do it.

Re: Cricket Photo's

I have a great photo on the wall of me taking a catch, im ready for the ball and you can just see it entering the shot

Hope you get some good photos!

Re: Cricket Photo's

I'm not saying that I'm going to be that successful at it, but it should be relatively easy what with using a digital camera. It's like batting your timing has to be right. I'm more concerned with making the whole thing look good - the backgrounds and angles you shoot it from and waiting for opportunities to shoot the pictures at away matches rather than our ugly urban pitch that we have to use.
