ECB set to accept big-money match

ECB chairman Giles Clarke says the prospect of England taking part in a winner-takes-all $20m Twenty20 match in the West Indies is "very likely".

From the BBC.

So the ECB response to the IPL is so far taking the form of a knock-about match? Sums up the ECB all over I think, for all the criticism I give the BCCI, they at the very least dynamic.

Re: ECB set to accept big-money match

I think Allen Stanford had proposed a $20 million match involving the Twenty20 World Champions. BCCI doesn't allow the players to participate in unofficial tournaments so he had to look for alternatives.

$20 million for just one match? That must be crazy. If it was a tournament with five games it would be better. What if the game turns out to be boring? Lets say the WI all stars get bowled out under hundred and England chase it comfortably. How is that going to help the game? If he wants to promote the game in America a 5 match tournament held in USA it self would be more useful. Allen Stanford might have a lot of money but wouldn't it help cricket more if he uses it more wisely?

Re: ECB set to accept big-money match

He's ready to spend $100 million of five games.

Allen Stanford, the Texas-based billionaire, has reportedly offered the England board a staggering US$100 million for five Twenty20 matches in five years against a West Indies all-star side.

Stanford held talks with David Collier, the chief executive of the ECB, earlier this week where he offered $20 million for a match between England and a West Indies all-star team to coincide with the Independence Day in Antigua on November 1. If the match takes place, it will be the most expensive cricket match ever played.

The English players surely wouldn't feel the need to play in the IPL, if this deal goes through.

Is this guy crazy? I know he has billions but what kind of a busniessman blows away his money just because he has a lot of it?
I think the players would still be more than happy to play if they were offered $20 million for a 5 match tournament. Why will people watch this game? I don't think its going to be a high quality game.
