Fast bowling fitness

Re: Fast bowling fitness

JB, I would like to reinforce what David says, squats are great, functional and incredibly important. Go for it, just without weights.

I have to say, I got really, really excited when I saw swinger's link. For once, I saw something I could not fault [I tried :D]. Look at Steve Cotter's posture... fantastic! See how he keeps his lower leg perpendicular to the ground and how is keeps his trunk vertical?

More importantly, the exercise is broken down into its individual components so well. Follow the section from "Test to identify weak links in the pistol" and do not move on until you have mastered each one. Doing it this way, you will really notice the benefits quite quickly.

As for the side plank... yes!

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Fast bowling fitness

Just to run it past you, this is what I'm planning to do as a sort of routine thing:

Every night:
20 pressups
20 crunches
20 rotational pressups/inverted pressups
20secs plank/side plank
one 'session' of single leg squats (ie learning how to do them)

Then increase the number (starting with 20) by 5 every week, until I reach around 50 or so then leave it at that.

Most Wednesdays I do weights in games sessions and I tend to just work on the routines left out by the rugby coaches (e.g. 'shoulder, tricep, legs' or 'chest, bicep, back')

Re: Fast bowling fitness

I have to apologise JB, I think I took a couple of years off you :D

Am I right in thinking you are 17?

If so, I have to rethink your workout... I'm sending you a 12 week progressive programme written for a rugby player who also plays cricket. Have a look and come back to this thread if you need any clarifications.

Re: Fast bowling fitness

I'm just reading through it at the moment, it looks great!! I'll post back if I find anything confusing, and don't worry, I will :p

Yeah, I'm 17 and about 2 months

Squats - http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/OlympicLifts/FrontSquat.html

If you weight 70kg (11 stone) you should be able to front squat with that weight on the bar.

Although I would not recommend under 18's doing this.

Over 18's should build up to is slowly starting with just the bar and developing good technique before adding weight gradually (2.5-5kg per session).

Why do think under 18s should not do this? That is not what experienced S&C coaches think.

Re: Fast bowling fitness

Due to the potential for injury on bodies which may not be fully developed? It's something that I've always been taught, from a variety of different sources, including S&C coaches.

Its absolute nonsense and just a myth. All you need is a good coach. The potential for injuries in soccer is more than weight lifting so do you stop your kids from soccer? It is high time we put these myths to rest. As I guess the purpose of this forum is to provide quality advice and information to the cricket community.

Re: Fast bowling fitness

I don't think it's a myth. If you do intense workouts with weights it is not good for your growth.

The potential for injury is there, as it is in all sports but weight lifting is slightly different in that it is far easier to fall into bad habits than other sports. It may be all great and good advising a 13 year old to go and bulk up with free weights but unless they are supervised by someone who knows what they are doing, it's very easy for damage to be done.

As posted above the key is a good coach but how many are there around that can be trusted? Personally, I don't want to be sued in 2/5/10 years time or whatever because some kid is injured and is blaming advice found on this site. Hence we err on the side of caution.

If someone is determined to do weights then we'll see what we can do to point them in the right direction and with a knowledgeable coach, face to face, which in my opinion is the best way when it comes to learning weight techniques.

Agreed.

Therein lies the rub newbie.

David, This kind of logic is self defeating. Just because you cannot get a good coach you advice against the best way to train? Of course one can find a good strength coach outside of cricket, Britain is not that backward is it? Finding a coach to teach you the big lifts correctly is not a big problem if you have the desire. Maybe you should learn them yourself and train youngsters.
