Finger spinners and bowling around the wicket

Watching all our finger spinners and a few others something always confuses me as to why left arm finger spinners bowl around the wicket to right handers and why off spinners bowl around to left handers.

Bowling around the wicket.
Pros Bowling around
-Bowling around the wicket if there is plenty of drift it can cramp the batsmen up and tie them down.
-If the ball is turning they can get an LBW.
-Flight can be really effective and can get batsmen bowled if the spinner is getting in drift but no spin and especially if it's skidding (Lehmann & Clarke).
-Can bowl a wider line to the batsmen.
-Can bowl a batsmen with a straight ball or dosera.
-Can get an edge from good turn out of the rough.
-Can hit the rough.

Cons bowling around
-Can't set the batsmen up for a straight ball (arm ball) or doosera to get them LBW as well.
-Less likely to get a miss hit or stumping by tossing the ball up if you are getting good turn. Batsmen trying to hit straight down the ground should be bowled tossed up deliverys over the wicket if the bowler is turning it. Harris in a test was getting hammered straight by Haddin and he eventually bowled over the wicket and got him out almsost instantly. Prime example. Yet after Harris continually bowler around the wicket to right handers including Haddin. Smart?
-Ball only straightens instead of leaving the batsmen and is often hitable.
-Doesn't leave the batsmen as much off the line. Might be more likely to take an edge bowling around.

I don't know why in one day cricket when batsmen are attacking and bowlers like Vettori and Krejza who do toss the ball up and get plenty of turn don't try bowling over the wicket more often. Some spinners are like robots and do what they are programmed I recon. Bowling around the wicket is fine if you arent turning the ball (Clarke) but for those that do they should bowl over more I recon.

The best finger spinners (murilitharin and Harbajan) bowl around as a second option and they get very good results.

I think if they turn the ball a lot and like to toss it up and flight it like Krejza they should bowl over the wicket but guys who skid the ball and bowl good flight are better off going around.
So at the end of all this should finger spinners bowl around the wicket to batsmen of the opposite hand as a first option?

Re: Finger spinners and bowling around the wicket

Coming around the wicket is a more defensive option. Bowlers like Clarke are there to take up overs and go cheap. Also in the ODI format they don't want to concede too many runs.

Attacking bowlers will bowl over the wicket to get more wickets and is hence more common in test match cricket.

In answer to the question it depends on the format, but I prefer around the wicket to be honest.

Quality post and topic.

Re: Finger spinners and bowling around the wicket

yeah watching Krejza the other day he bowler around to left handers in a ODD V Victoria. He didn't get great results but I think was looking for the rough that was there and spnning.

I recon if he wants to make it as a bowler he has to go for his wickets and follow the great off spinners lead and bowl more over the wicket.

In One Day cricket the batsmen are going to attack so on one had you want to keep the runs down but on the other hand they should be easier to get out. Krejza isn't like most offies, he turns the ball. I recon he needs to go over the wicket and try and get the Left handers to go after him by tossing them up, turning it and bowling outside off. Be confident and go for the jugular, batsmen can't make runs when there out.
That's how Warne and Murali bowl and Murali is the highest wicket taker in ODIs...

Re: Finger spinners and bowling around the wicket

I dont mind the around the wicket option for an off-spinner to left handers, it is by no means a defensive option.

They have the rough to aim at which is such a plus for them. Gives them more grip, bounce, turn and puts the uncertainty in the batsman mind. Krezja is a bloke that needs to bowl more arond the wicket when lefties are out there. Have a field set something like bat pad, silly point, slip and a short cover at least. The guy has the ability to win us matches, please oh please selectors give him a chance.

Agreed, everyone says he needs to learn his game, but they need to give the guy experience, 12 wickets on debut is an excellent figure.

Re: Finger spinners and bowling around the wicket

I think bowlers who don't have a good straight ball or doosera bowl around the wicket a lot more as they have a better chance of bowling or getting the batsmen out LBW that way if they can't set them up for it.
