Ford Ranger Cup Final - Tasmania vs Victoria at Bellerive Oval

The final of the Ford Ranger Cup is well underway with Tasmania hosting Victoria at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Victoria won the toss and chose to bat first. Things didn't go well for them and Tasmania bowled them out for 158 in the 38th over. David Hussey continued his good form with the bat, making 50 and Andrew McDonald scored 35 but that was it for the Victorians as the rest were bundled out pretty cheaply. Only Rob Quiney and Clint McKay were the only other batters to score double figures. Ben Hilfenhaus and Brett Geeves destroyed the Victorian batters early and both finished with three wickets. Xavier Doherty was the main destroyer though, cleaning up the middle order and the tail to finish with 4/18 off 6.3 overs.

In reply, Tasmania are 2/41 in the 8th over and we are currently off for a rain delay. Dane Anderson has the top score with 25 but was to Clint McKay. Dirk Nannes has the other wicket which was Tim Paine for six.

We need 20 overs for a game so there's still a long way to go yet. Tassie are currently ahead by nine runs using the Duckworth/Lewis system and they'll look to stay ahead for the remainder of the game. A "No result" will result in a Tasmanian win as they finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season. The team that finishes on top of the ladder earns the right to host the final, hence why the game is at Bellerive.

Tassie in the box seat at the moment.

The players are coming back onto the field. The game will now be a 47-over match and target has been reduced by three runs to 155.

Poor start by McKay, first ball after the delay is on Dighton's legs and is smashed through square leg for four. Second ball is a dot.

2/45 after eight overs, Tasmania ahead by 13 on D/L method.

Dighton out for 19 to McKay but the run rate continues to stay above 5 an over.

3/68 after 13 overs, captain Dan Marsh is on 10 with new batsman George Bailey on 7.

Tassie 17 ahead on D/L now.

EDIT: McKay gets Bailey for seven, 4/68 now, perhaps we have a game here.

Well, I've finally regained my breath after watching 1 of the weirdest finals I've ever seen. Tasmania made hard work of it in the end, but I'm still here after thinking I might have had a heart attack watching all that!

Re: Ford Ranger Cup Final - Tasmania vs Victoria at Bellerive Oval

In what looked to be a pretty straight forward game turned out to be a complex and an exciting one as Tasmania made hard work of Victoria's small total. Dan Marsh fell for 10 to make the score 5/76. At 5/89, the players went off once again for rain, only to return with another revised target, this time it was 131 required with 31 overs to get them in. Mark Divin was out for 18 and when Xavier Doherty fell, Tassie were 7/109.

Brett Geeves made an important six before edging behind off Dirk Nannes and then Brendan Drew snicked Bryce McGain in the second last over with Tasmania still needing three off eight balls with only one wicket in hand. Ben Hilfenhaus then faced the last two balls before Tim Paine hit three runs off the first ball of the last over to win Tasmania the game and to win the Ford Ranger Cup for 2007/2008.

It was an exciting finish, and one people didn't expect after the Vics could only manage 158. But Tasmania also struggled on what turned out to be a bowlers paradise, most likely due to the gloomy weather which was served up today and in the days running up to the match.

Anyway, congratulations to Tasmania, they were most certainly the best one-day team all season and they deserved to take home the Ford Ranger Cup. This is the second time they have won this competition, their first triumph was back in 2004/2005. Their win also denies Victoria the rare treble (Twenty20, Ford Ranger Cup, Pura Cup).

So, two trophies have been decided in the domestic comp, only one to go now and that is the Pura Cup. Both teams have already been decided, those two being Victoria and New South Wales, it's just a matter of where the game will be played. Still two rounds remaining though, so plenty of cricket to go in the competition.

Brett Geeves was named Man of the Match for his 3/28 off eight over and then his six runs.

Matthew Elliott was named Man of the Series for an outstanding Ford ranger Cup campaign, he starred all season opening the batting for South Australia and he heads into retirement with a nice finish to his career.

Onto the Pura Cup now, who will be the four day champions??

Re: Ford Ranger Cup Final - Tasmania vs Victoria at Bellerive Oval

It was Travis Birt who hit the winning runs actually, sorry to say.
Anyway, despite the fact it was a thrilling match, you've got to say that the better side won. Several things that made the match close were the excellent bowling by Victoria, Tasmania throwing their wickets away (Xavier Doherty, while you're not a batsman you should be embarrassed about that wild charge down the pitch on only the 2nd ball of your innings), the rain which usually affects the batting side more than the bowling, and Peter Parker, who I would murder if we lost that match and he came down to officiate another Bellerive match.
All in all though, these 2 sides were by far the best sides in the one-day comp for the year and deserved finalists. Commiserations Victoria, congratulations Tasmania.
And yes, on to the Pura Cup, where Tasmania only have pride to play for (and a trophy they will temporarily have in their position), while the Vics have a final guaranteed and will be playing for a home one too.

I always confuse Birt and Paine.

Good to see the Vics lose though. @|
