Game 1, Group A - South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg

Well, the first game is not too far away and we are about to head into the unknown. We have only ever had 16 games in total of this Twenty20 format and this is first time that we have ever had an international tournament based on Twenty20 cricket.

We should be in for an entertaining contest, the South Africans have a sophisticated Twenty20 domestic competition similar to England's so we may see those two countries emerge as the frontrunners for this inaugural trophy.

But, back to this game. South Africa will be keen to impress in their home tournament and their fans will expect nothing less. The Proteas were great against Australia in their last warm-up game, Graeme Smith and co proved to be very good hitters of the ball and players like Boucher, Pollock and Gibbs will look forward to smashing everything in sight.

West Indies have their hitters too, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels can hit the ball a long way. Samuels has struck at over 200 runs per ball in the two practice matches he has played.

South Africa XI: 1 Graeme Smith*, 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Mark Boucher+, 5 Justin Kemp, 6 Shaun Pollock, 7 Makhaya Ntini, 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Johan van der wath, 10 Vernon Philander, 11 Morne Morkel.

West Indies XI: 1 Chris Gayle*, 2 Devon Smith, 3 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Denesh Ramdin+, 8 Dwayne Smith, 9 Daren Powell, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Fidel Edwards.

South Africa have a bowler-favoured line-up there. However, Shaun Pollock may just be playing as a batsman. Van der Wath and Philander add some bite to the tail too.

Pretty standard side from the Windies. One all-rounder in Bravo and then four bowlers make up the tail. Only five batters but then again, South Africa only have five recognized batters also. Maybe they know something we don't.

Anyway, this will be an exciting fixture. Aim of the game is slog, slog, slog!!

Toss: South Africa who will bowl first.

Re: Game 1, Group A - South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg

Chris Gayle has gone absolutely ballistic early on here. He's hit 3 fours and 3 sixes on his way to 39 not out so far from only 18 deliveries. Devon Smith has been a little more tame with 10 off 15 balls.

Shaun Pollock was dragged after just two overs as 22 runs were taken off them. Ntini didn't escape after a good first over. Gayle smashed two huge sixes from balls five and six to up the scoring rate which saw Nitini replaced by Morne Morkel.

0/52 after 5.3 overs.

Re: Game 1, Group A - South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg

Just over the halfway mark of the West Indian innings and the Windies are 0/131 after 12 overs.

Chris Gayle is on fire and has blasted the South African bowling attack all over the ground. He's 86 not out off 43 balls and has 7 sixes, the most in an international Twenty20 fixture. He also has 5 fours. Devon Smith has picked up his game also with 34 off 30.

Graeme Smith has brought himself on to bowl. It looks like he is bereft of ideas. Every bowler has been absoultely carted.

Brilliant commentary too.

cricinfo commentary said:
Smith to Gayle, SIX, Twhack. Six over long-on. Easy. It was in the slot, on the middle stump, Gayle cleared his front foot and slogged it over the long-on fielder. Gayle is playing Stick Cricket out there.

Re: Game 1, Group A - South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg

Philander claims Devon Smith with a faint edge to Boucher.

But then Marlon Samuels hits his second ball faced for six but falls two balls after!!

Gayle moves up to 99 not out after hitting Pollock for two consecutive sixes in the previous over.

2/152 after 14.2 overs.

Re: Game 1, Group A - South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg

And there we go!!!! Gayle breaks the barrier with a nice hit down the ground for two.

Chris Gayle has the first ever International Twenty20 century!!! It took him exactly 50 balls to do so, a wonderful effort and unbeliveably in the first game of the tournament!!!

2/167 after 15 overs, Gayle 111 not out with 10 sixes!!!!

This is insane!!!

I must also make mention, Chris Gayle is not the captain of this side like has been stated in my first post on this thread. The captain for this game is Ramnaresh Sarwan and he has joined Gayle in the middle.

Re: Game 1, Group A - South Africa vs West Indies at Johannesburg

Chris Gayle's 117 off 57 balls including 7 4's and 10 6's carried the West Indies to 6/205 off their 50 overs. Johan van der Wath and Vernon Philander took 2 and Shaun Pollock and Morne Morkel took 1.

For South Africa Herschelle Gibbs made 90 off 55, Justin Kemp got 46 off 22 and Graeme Smith got 28 off 21. South Africa ended up chasing the massive target in just 17.4 overs finishing up on 2/208. Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul each took 1 wicket.

South Africa are making a habit of braking records to win on that ground.
