What about Div 2? Any predictions?

Thomson - if full strength all year will be hard to beat. Salta and Smelly to get them of to strong starts, plenty of good young kids coming thru
St Peters - good all round team, expect another big year from Illingworth + the younger ones to push thru the grades
Manifold - competitive at times in Div 1, with no player loss will be up there
Corio - Fergusson himself will score 500-700 runs + Arnott, bowling will be the worry
Highton - still competitive and will be all year
Waurn Ponds - the Skene's will produce again in Divvy 2

Alexander Thomson and Torquay will be there abouts aswell

Div 2:

Thomson
Highton
St Peters
Corio
Manifold Heights

Will expand a bit on my previous post; sorry should have done so at the time:

-Thomson: The injection of Smiljanic will have a huge impact with the presence of good cricketers around him. Not as much pressure on Salts = more runs.
-Highton: Keep scraping results together and play very well as a team but crumbled last year.
-St Peters: Will miss Lamb a lot but will be well covered by Graham Clarke who took 40 and made 400 in the 2nds last year. Youngsters DeBeer & Harvey to keep improving. Could have another Pom on the way.
-Corio: Fergie will be massive but am tipping they will implode and may not even make finals. Tip as 4th because of last season's promise.
-Manifold: Div 2 has improved since they were last here and Runners Up. Last time there was no Thomson, no Torquay, Corio were no good and neither were Waurn Ponds. Not the walk up start that they think they will be.

-Waurn Ponds maybe just outside. They achieved great things last year and played to their optimum; first ever 1st XI flag. They will miss Chapman and Hilditch immensely and have no replacements at this stage. Back-up quick Karofilis also leaving.

Not convinced at all mate, but there you go.

u have to remember that its div2!! they will be there abouts.

Manifold will be very good if they don't lose anyone, were competitive in div 1 last season for the majority, so the drop down won't be the worse thing ever for them, on-field anyways.

Is the younger Condy staying or has he been snapped up by Geelong CC?

herbison just wants to play with his mates at the heads, isn't too interested in cricket, is quite a good footy player aswell and is more committed there.

he was at vic u19s but a that stage he was still training/playing at geelong.
but even he admitted getting in the team was well beyond him, said it was good practice tho.

yeah i agree with the bit about good practice, i played one season with a vca club in their lower grades, was never going to be good enough to make the higher grades but training with those guys was awesome, did plenty for my skills in just one season. Especially fielding.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

True enough, think Div 2 might be the most competitive of the 3 divvys! Have a sneak for Torquay for some reason, but do think Thomson will take some beating, as will Manifold and Corio.

yer that is a fair point there Mr Joe, will be very interesting to see how the teams get on this season.

with Bourke back Torquay will be ok in Div2, as long as they don't lose any more players :D

Hang on a minute; please correct me if I'm wrong; you're inclusions are Scott Lindsay and Adam Pitts and your losses are Colin Millard. All of a sudden you are going to arrest your slide down the foot of the ladder and surge past the rest of the sides including at least one of last season's grand finalists and get yourself into the top 2. I must be missing something. I would have thought that you would be satisfied by being competitive and knocking on the door of the finals; let alone a grand final appearnce. Good on you if you get that far.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Torquay have some decent young kids - Kid called Tommy Dunn who was in the Addy a few weeks back as he is a top Football Goalkeeper, is thoroughly decent all rounder. He will go very well in Div 2. He had a few good games last year, and is a year older and stronger. Bourke will get the best out of them, along with getting stacks of runs and wickets himself.

Spot on Renny! Losing Trav Agg is bigger than gaining Lindsay. Pitts has never been an overly consistant player but will be handy. He would equal Millards lose. I must admit, I think last year was a bad one out of the box for City. City will finish between 4 to 8. No higher, no lower.

yer i spose last year although alot of there players were exposed in division one thru lack of depth will only benefit them in the long run.

Tom Aldridge is a decent left hander swing bowler who should benefit from a full season in the ones.

Yes Bourke, Ferguson, Smiljanic... who will score the most runs.

The weird thing is, they will all probably take alot of wickets aswell :D

I would replace Leopold with Joeys. I know they lost a couple of very handy players, but I think they might have just about been replaced. They also have pretty good depth, something Leopold has not got. I still think it is a 4 horse race though (South, East, Grovie & West), But God knows what order!

Mind you, South did beat East last year in a BIG game when no one expected it, I think other clubs now know they can be beaten. East will feel that this year. Grovie might be to cocky. South will have something to prove and West could be anything on a good day. Should be a cracker of a year for the GCA Div 1 comp.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

All top class GCA players so should be a good competition! I really think it will be a battle of the kids around these guys though. Different to Div 1 where all players can do a job, Div 2 is gonna be a case of which junior guys mature enough through the year to perform!

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

is Agg going to Geelong to captain the 2's better than staying put for his own career?

fair observation there.
Highton are supossed to have a few youngsters there aswell.
Is Louis "i'm a division 2 specialist" Cameron staying on there?

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

No idea mate, but there are a few "Divvy 2" specialists this year who may get a shock with the standard going up!

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

I heard today that Torquay have confirmed the pommie coach for the season!

Shark Bite, MIillard for Lindsay is basically a straight swap.

Scott Lindsay will make consistant runs and is a complete batsman. Millard does an amazing job for the natural talent he was given but has a very limited game. Millard will not make runs if you know where to bowl to him.

Travis Agg will be the loss of the season. Marsland is a talent, but what else do they have in the bowling stocks? Crellin has to be done. Kent Agg is honest but not front line.

the bpca isn't the strongest comp going around but does have some decent bowlers eg. Chris Welford who bowls ok from all reports and luke hardiman from down at ocean grove les wallace from barwon heads brendan long from collendina these blokes all can hold there own and a couple have been gun players in GCA1 although hardiman is getting on a bit id imagine he still bowls ok

you left out jason murray and chris jones from st albans

i'm sure they'd love to play you guys in the BPCA but they are in the GCA, practice matches are indeed that.... practice.
Saw you play them in the 20/20, you guys were good and no doubt you would be in the top5 in divvy 2, just need to get in there!!

And any chance you could score a run this year Johnny?

You becoming more and more famous for your 160 odd in u13s :D

Shark Bite, MIillard for Lindsay is basically a straight swap.
Pitts isn't exactly a divvy one run machine either.
Although dickie bird has said Jarvis is on some coin so i'm sure he'll earn it by scoring some runs this year :D

I'm predicting Geelong City to finish in the bottom 3, Marsland's back will fire up and again and he'll become disinterested, the loss of Travis Agg has depleted your bowling and Millard was the only one who scored runs for you last year, and even he wasn't great. Lindsay, Pitts and Jarvis need to score 1500 between them for you to have any chance of making finals!!

People are picking Thomson on the strength of signing Smelly.

they finished 3rd without him last year and they do have alot of young players there.
Riches, Bliss, O'Neill x2, Rodgers, Gill, Trezise are all 15-21 throw in the experience of Saltamachia, Smiljanic, Dahlahaus, Bosworth, Castle and they are every chance to progress on last years 3rd place.

Not many other clubs in the Divvy 2 can stake a claim to having that much home grown talent, maybe Highton and St Peters.

It is good to see these young players progressing thru the ranks to play in the 1st XI.

I know St Peters have got structures in place to fast-track there juniors thru the seniors, which isn't dis-similar to Newtown, it all takes time tho :)

It is quite rewarding for all concerned when the youngsters do well :D

OK then, let's look at this revised Div 2 Top 5:

St Albans
Thomson
Highton
St Peters
Manifold Heights.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

The key's are Bosworth and Smelly, probably more so Bosworth. Smelly is hit and miss, and that's what you get. devastating yes, consistent, no.

Re: Geelong Cricket '08/'09(gca/bpca)

Yes Bourke, Ferguson, Smiljanic... who will score the most runs.

The weird thing is, they will all probably take alot of wickets aswell :D[/QUOTE]

Don't forget Adam Gaylard either. And don't write off St Peters. They had a solid season last year and were dissapointed by their loss in the semi. Had four players score over 350 last year and one of their better bats in Clay Nelson had a bad year. Thomson and Mano I think will take the headlines but St Peters could well slip under some guards.

u would think that geelong cricket club would get michael condy cause he is a great batt and not a bad wicket keeper and even as a bowler and with geelong theses days they just go and take the best juniors from other clubs eg. luke ibbs and daniel bolton from modewarre and so on
