Good length balls!!!

Whenever i play a good length ball i just get bowled. Sometimes when i try it on the front foot i miss it. Same case for the back foot.
Can anyone give me some advice on how i can get rid of this problem. i would be happy if u can give me some advice

Re: Good length balls!!!

Its pretty hard to say without actually seeing you bat and could be numerous issues .
1) you aren't moving your feet enough , if your only getting a small stride forward you would be leaving a massive gap between bat/pad . A lot of guys only get half forward .
2) if its a good length ball you should be forward and not back . If you are going back your making things harder for yourself
3) if you are too bottom handed this may be forcing your bat down at an angle and not straight , a lot of guys get bowled like this . Only grip with your finger and thumb on your bottom hand , this will help your top hand take over and you will play straighter .
4) lastly watch the ball all the way

If you are getting clean bowled a lot I would be suggesting you have a technique issue . See a quality coach in your area and hthey will most likely pick up very quickly what the issue is . Good luck .

Re: Good length balls!!!

I would have to second most of what CNCC1979 said. You probably need to take as big a stride as possible, without over-balancing. Try to watch the ball onto the bat. Also good length balls should be played off the front foot, as the are probably stump high. Only if the pitch is really bouncing should you play on the back foot.

But get a coach to look at your technique, or barring that, anybody else who can look for any glaring problems

Re: Good length balls!!!

i seem to be a bit :confused:confused about how to go about it. Probably the speed beats me...
I will try my best to tackle this.
One more question...
Can i advance down the pitch on these balls????

Re: Good length balls!!!

Mate i think you possible need to see a coach about it . Like i said before without really viewing you , myself or anyone else on here are can really only take an educated guess on what the issue is . Can i ask what standard you play ? this may help .

What i will say is find that thing that is most comfortable for you and stick with it . Don't get caught trying to many different technique changes and listen to your coach .

If the problem is speed or pace , the only way you can counter this is to gradually face quicker bowling so you become attuned or used to it . Bowling machines are ideal for this .

Let us know how you go .

I mean you could. But it would be dangerous and possibly energy consuming to do that every ball. Also advancing to pace means you will probably be pre-meditating the move, and could end yorkering yourself or getting youself into a tangle.

My best advice, if it is pace, find a bowling machine, crank it up (not too quick though, you may want to ease in), put it on a good length and away you go. Having a coach around would also help. Failing that, just find your fastest bowler and face him in the nets.

Good luck mate

I play U-14. I have faced the fastest bowler in our side alot of times. First i am not comfortable but then its easy... i will ask him how to go about it...
I think when i 'm in the nets its easy to face any bowler for me but when im in the middle its a lot more tough.

Re: Good length balls!!!

You probably don't need to charge down the track every time. If you're facing a fast bowler with the keeper standing back, you can always stand some way out of your crease to counter this. That way those good length deliveries would be half volleys easily dispatchable and the good length to where you are standing would be around half way and in that case take a big step, and a big one at that, so that it would then be a short ball which you shouldn't have a problem dealing with. But then again. This technique will only work if you can spot the ball pretty early.

Re: Good length balls!!!

If you are getting bowled by a quick bowler, maybe you might need to work on your reaction time a little. Throw some balls against a trampoline or ask a team mate to throw you some balls so you are watching them all the time.

If the ball is a good length how about in the nets insted of trying to smash a drive just set yourself up to play defensive shots the whole time work from there and when you have some confidence play some straight drives.

Re: Good length balls!!!

i will try to tackle this and tell the outcome. Can anyone of you look for a video and give it or make ur own and give put it here ?????? THANKS

Re: Good length balls!!!

Abhas W,
If u can post a video of yours batting in the nets;then it will be easy to judge and then comment on it.
Shoot it from the umpire's end for full coverage of your batting stance.
Best of luck

Re: Good length balls!!!

Given your in under 14's definitely see a coach asap . If you get onto the issue now it will be far easier to sort out then in a few years when any issue you may have becomes an ingrained habit into your batting .

Re: Good length balls!!!

Keep it simple. Have a coach or a knowledgeable player have a look at your stance and what you're doing when playing this particular stroke/length ball.

The key thing when batting is balance and keeping the head still and really should be all you need to worry about at your age - don't get bogged down with theory too much.

You may just be having a bad trot or it could be a fundamental flaw with technique. If you can get a video and post it, great it will help us to help you. If not, then you need to seek out the advice as suggested. Watching a video of other players won't help much as you need to look at you, the individual in this case.

Re: Good length balls!!!

Well a good one for the yorker is before it bounces try to use your feet and get to the ball before it bounce's. Well that is a tip for the yorker.
