OK the item can be improvised effortlessly, indoors or out. It should not be rough, oily, or particularly brittle.

I have a thin ornate steel bookmarker Craig. I have paper ones too, sometimes just a scrap. Can't say I've ever had a leather one but my 'metal' one was a big clue for me.

As a teen and young man I was guilty of folding over the corners of pages. Not anymore. Pity I do most of my reading off the net nowadays.
