High-tech bats to be made illegal

Law-maker the MCC has outlawed some modern bats after an overwhelming vote to rewrite one of cricket's key laws.

With a two-thirds majority needed, 98.6% of members voted to re-write law 6, which calls for "equal balance between bat and ball".

The new law now stipulates that 90% of the volume of bat handles should be made of cane, wood and/or twine.

The other 10% can be used "for the purpose of reducing vibration, for example rubber".

The handles, including the splice, must also not exceed 52% of the overall length of the bat and the law also restricts the thickness of materials that can be used to protect and repair bats.

They said it was on the cards and it seems that the motion has been passed, so we're back to pretty much traditional bats. Not sure whether this is a good thing or bad thing long term but at the moment I can see the positives, only if the game is becoming more batsman friendly.

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

honestly i'm all for it! i think if you started introducing carbon and other such elements into the bats it would become ridiculous! They wont change the Balls so why should the batsmen get the advantage!

:D

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

Why dont they change the balls for better? Instead of stopping technological progress which makes Cricket better they should encourage it. Whats wrong with having strong handles?

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

Change the balls to what though?

They already have enough trouble trying to create anything other than a red ball, what hope do they have of changing anything else!

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

lol i know what u mean!

it was more of a point than anything realistic!

carbon weighted aero balls!

whats wrong with wooden handles?

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

For starters they could make a ball that stays new for longer. That way the bowlers would be able to get swing for a longer time. Maybe if they used something better than leather then it would last longer.

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

I don't think this is a bad thing. Whilst it never ceases to irritate me how archaic and backwards-looking Cricket's decision-makers can be, this at least is a positive. The areas we want technology are those that help Umpires make the right decisions, and those that can help coaches improve the techniques of up and coming players. What we don't want is for technology to water down the level of skill and hard work that the players require to be able to play at the highest level. Look at football, for example - the balls now are so ridiculously light that a well-struck shot can spin in two or three different directions in the air - the player certainly didn't mean for it to do that (no matter what he says!) and the poor keeper has no chance. So yes, I'm glad MCC have made a stand on this one. A rare job well done.

i'm with Nightvision! its a gentlemen's game not a technological showcase!

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

This is a great decision. Personally I never notice the blunders of those in charge (never paid much attention to the wheelings and dealings of the head honchos to be honest) but this is a step in the right direction. This perception that a 4 must be hit every second ball really bugs me. It takes the specialness out of the boundary. At least with 'proper' bats it make batsmen work for their runs instead of them being served on a platter. Hopefully this will, as they said, even up the contest between bat and ball, which has been very one sided for a long time.

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

and lets not forget the amazing craftsmen who make our Beautiful bats!

i will always have one over a mass produced item made by a machine! especially if it comes form china lol

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

Yep, the only reason I bought my GN was because it was made in Melbourne and it was designed by a local (Bob Meuleman), not by some poor child in a sweat shop. Its a shame that you don't see enough bats made by quality craftsmen rather than multinational companies

Uh oh, post 666

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh, how bout that song........Cats in the Cradle, great song.......phew!

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

Yeah, glad that debacle has finished :D

How is it possible to make balls any lighter? And what would be an advantage for anbody? Generally when people talk about 'good' and 'better' things it is 'good' and 'better' for a batsman and not the bowler. So lets get back to tradition with wood and rubber bats and cork and leather balls. Nothing more nothing less

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

i'm all for technology! i dont mind the advanced materials in the protection area's Helmets, pads, gloves etc but not in the most basic form of the game!

Bat = Willow
Ball = Leather

simple as!

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

Oh yeah, I don't want to go back to the rubber batting gloves which didn't actually work when it somes to protection.
I wonder how this will affect world wide batting. Porbably not a lot but maybe it will...

That is a fair point but what and how would it effect the game as a whole? A harder ball may mean that the spinners are taken out of a game for example. For every 'progression' it seems that someone loses out, somewhere.

I'm all for progress as long as it benefits the game, though bat shapes etc have changed over the years the basic methods are still the same, if it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Re: High-tech bats to be made illegal

I dont like when people say that we should stick with tradition. Are we still in the stone age? As technology progresses we should progress too. Why should cricket be an exception?
