I started a little hotbed in canada.

First of all, Let me begin saying I'm from Canada. What you guys think as a non-contending or even playing cricket nation. Anyways, I used to live on a reservation in Quebec (in 2000) in James Bay and there's one east indian math teacher I had back in elementary who knew about the sport. So in one class, the students got in a discussion about hockey with him and asked him if he supported the Habs or not? He said no. He said that he doesn't really follow hockey that much but follows another sport. His exact words were "I like sports, sports...you wouldn't understand." At the end of class, I felt compelled to find out what he meant by those words. So one day, I asked him about this and told me that he watches cricket. Eventually, he tells me about the rules and I get the gisp of it.
On the reservation, baseball was king here and our summers last from may to sept. So on one day on the field by the river, my friends and I were playing baseball. Around this time, I told the guys I found another way to playing baseball, the cuban way of playing of it.(I was essentially lying to them) These guys were pretty naive and gullable. This supposed other way of playing baseball was cricket and since I was a bit popular in school, most of the baseball players took up the sport almost immediately and then a year later, our town had a first ever cricket tournament. The sport was all of a sudden the flavor of the month but it kept going! So starting May, on the third week, we have a one of those one day tests. The town has four clubs; they include the construction company team; official seniors mens squad; the police dept squad and the high school team. We only a few tests in the summer and despite the conditions up here are not so cricket like. We modified the game to work up here. We have only have one day tests up with the seniors teams; they usually take place every other week in the summer and in late august, we have a five team competition. So, baseball is second to this sport by a few games and now it seems acceptable out here.

I checked up on our little town last week because the cricket world cup reminded me of my former hometown and so far since 2000, we're the only town in that area of james bay that does cricket and its the town's secret pastime. I know its small but its start. The sport must grow in Canada!

Thoughts? Heck, most viewers reading this will probably be aussies, english or indian. I can't see canadians even reading this.

There's 2-4 Canadians that regularly read this board.
I'm pretty sure they're from Toronto though.

That's interesting, redmoon. Your story is unusual but not unheard of. I read of a teacher from Zimbabwe living northern Ontario that introduced cricket to native children. I think they got some equipment from the Canadian Cricket Association.

If you are interested in sharing the story of cricket in James Bay with others you could write a short article and send it to canadacricket.com : http://www.canadacricket.com/ . They post items like that on their website. Pictures would be nice too, if you have them.

Developing the game around the world is what is needed and good on you for getting something going in Canada and that it has stayed. @|
