Plans are afoot to make Test matches more attractive and ensure the Twenty20 format does not destroy the traditional five-day game, according to IS Bindra, who will take charge as the ICC's principal advisor next month.
I don't see how they're going to have a World Championship. If it were all to happen in a tournament format, it'd take a few months to complete. It would completely burn out the players from having to play test match after test match.
The only way they could do this would be to hold it over a one year period or maybe longer and have groups of four and play group games once a month and then have a Super Six stage where teams also play each other once a month. Then the semis and of course the Grand Final.
Not a great idea really, seems to just be another thing the ICC can more dollars out of.
I do remember watching highlights of New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka, South Africa vs. Pakistan, South Africa vs. India, South Africa vs West Indies test series last year/early this year. Fact of the matter is, there was nobody in attendance watching any cricket. This in spite of some good cricket being played for the most part. Lasith Malinga or Dale Steyn's bowling sure was great cricket.
Not all test series get huge crowd following like the Ashes or Australia vs. India or India vs. Pakistan. Actually, even the last India vs. Pakistan test series was a downer for various reasons. So it is true that test cricket is faced with an identity crisis and some troubling financial times ahead. The problem is, the solution being proposed may make it even more irrelevant. Specifically if the solution involves a gluttony of test cricket, it's most likely going to doom it.
