ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

Assuming that the other thread is for the ICL 2007 T20 Championship, I thought I'd start a new thread for the announced massive expansion of the ICL in 2008.

The future plans of the ICL

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) will conduct four additional tournaments in its second edition in 2008. Unveiling its future plans, Subhash Chandra, chairman of the Essel Group, the company behind the venture, said he was happy with the way things had panned out in the inaugural season and was "impatient" for more good things to follow.

"The young Indian talent on display during the first season has opened the eyes of the world and already counties and various other cricket bodies are interested in some of the talent here," Chandra said minutes before the final between Chandigarh Lions and Chennai Superstars.

This sounds very promising but it all depends on how many domestic players choose to sign on and whether the ICL chooses to go with quality or quantity. After their respective treatment by the BCCI, I would not be surprised to see Chopra, Badrinath or Bose join the ICL and talents who have fallen through the net such as Kaif and Balaji may also be targets.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how this pans out. I wonder if they will have the same success in attracting overseas players after the 'official' BCCI tournament?

To be honest, I think that they are targeting two completely different markets of overseas players.

I think the IPL (official) will be targeting the stars like Ponting and Kallis whilst the ICL (unofficial) will be targeting 'has-beens' like Razzaq; T20 specialists such as Maddy and Harvey and recent retired players like Atapatu.

Are the players from the current ICL tournament contracted to play for the comps in 2008?

I believe that the standard ICL contract is three years so I guess the answer is yes.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

Sounds good but hopefully this gives them all time to find new stadiums they can use and organise it well.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

yeah i hope there are some new and better stadiums in the next time....i think most players who are more than 30 should join icl because they wont get chance to play for india.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

They should have some four day matches. There are too many competetions of twenty20. I think ICL will be a success if only youngsters join because old players dont have much chance to play for india they are only after money.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

I agree completely its essential that players play in all forms of the game and not simply 20/20. However it would be impossible to play 4 day games using just one stadium so it is of utmost importance they secure more stadiums to play their cricket.

With the recent 20/20 success;there will be no stopping;BCCI will try to stop their tournaments by not allocating cricket grounds;but Railways has offered to give them their grounds. Also one Club in Pakistan has also offered them ground.
Secondly;they have a option to conducted matches outside India as well. For Eg: Sharjah in UAE.Crowd will definitely be pulling in as International Stars(Lara,Cairns) are playing.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

I think thats a fantastic idea there actually. Taking the league out of india for some games would be great for their reputation and would spread the word of the game a lot further and also give the fans some good cricket to watch. Top idea. :D

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

wow there was a 50 over tournament. i wasnt even aware that it already happened. there was no media coverage either. with the recent excitement surrounding ipl it will be very hard for icl to survive.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

I think they are only blowing the advertising budget for when the big guns come out to play.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

I think the IPL has all the real international big players, the ICL has the fringe players, the has-beens and the older generation who didn't quite make it. Plus, they have sanctions against them from many boards, including teh ECB. In all, the future looks pretty bleak for it. Certainly, not as bright as when it first appeared.

Re: ICL announces four tournaments for 2008

Unless ICC recognizes them ICL wont be able to establish themselves. The future doesn't look bright for them.
