Australia and India may play ODI series in New York

Seems the BCCI (Indian Cricket board) are keen for Australia to play them in a 7-ODI series to be hosted in New York and also Toronto.

Talks are in the early stages at the moment but if this were to get off the ground, it would be a huge step in the right direction for cricket in the USA and would do wonders in promoting the sport to Americans.

Re: Australia and India may play ODI series in New York

I love this line:

It's believed an indoor NFL stadium in New York would host the games, meaning the matches would be played on a synthetic pitch. But Brown had his own doubts. "I'm not even sure whether they would have a suitable ground in New York," he said.

Hmm, let me think real hard about it.... Nope, there's no indoor NFL stadiums in New York City.

Exactimundo. In fact, no cricket ground worth mentioned AT ALL in New York, nor, for that matter, in the entire USA. This thing will never come off. USA once again proves itself to be the graveyard of world cricket rumors.

I wouldn't be so quick to rule it out. $$$ can make a lot of things happen. I don't think that Giants Stadium is the right size for a cricket match, but they might be able to do something at Shea.

I don't think it would necessarily have to be in New York either. RFK in Washington has move-able stands, and the Coliseum out in LA probably has enough space available.

You know, now that I think about it, Shea Stadium would be in use over the summer, but Giants Stadium would have a lot more open dates, so that might be their first choice in New York.

If they can play cricket up at the Skydome/Rogers Center, there must be a few stadiums that would work in the US.

Well, this news is coming out of Australia, not the US, so there's obviously a bit of truth to it.

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

Timmy,

What the hell? Every post you make is about how America is the key to cricket, and if the ICC only expanded there presence there, the world of cricket would be exponentially better than it is now. Now that there is a movement to do just that (albeit by CA and the BCCI) you think it is doomed to fail. Please stop being so annoying, and just grow up. Thanks.

Everyone else,

This would be very cool and also fun to attend the matches in Toronto. I hope it comes off well and is well attended!

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

Good on India and Australia actually having a discussion about playing some ODI in America. It would really expose the game out there and allow more people to get a better understanding of the game.

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

it seems like an event in the US comes up every couple of months.

as already stated, there is no indoor NFL stadium in the US. Giants stadium is too small for cricket. SKyDome worked i assume because baseball is also played there so the field demensions is not only the rectangular shape.

as much as i would love for it to be in giants stadium, it does not sound good, or truthful for that matter.

as i sit here brainstorming, a stadium with a surround track might work. Columbia U. in manhattan might work-

an updated one with seats on the other side-

of course all legitimacy is out with that one as the field would not be entirely grass. to get great media attention, they should get Yankee Stadium or Shea.

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

perhaps more professional looking would be icahn stadium on randalls island (between manhattan & queens).

temp seats could easily be added. this probably would be the best spot, but that being said on a map, its the most central location in NYC BUT its absolutely the worst place getting to. basically no public transport, and only a single lane of traffic on and off the island.

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

There was talk of an all-star exhibition cricket match being held in the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, two summers ago, but it fell through because some of the Pakistani international players couldn't get US visas. Here are two articles about it from cricinfo:

http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/207098.html

http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/210864.html

Was this operation for real? Would it have happened if not for the alleged visa problems? I don't know. Reports of fabulous goings-on involving cricket in America must be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, if ODIs were to be staged in the US (in addition to Canada), I would suggest a facility such as the Astrodome. It is still in use, but no longer by any major-league teams.

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

Given that all the money is coming from TV rights, do they need to play in a stadium despite it's unsuitablity for cricket, or could they put up temporary seating at an existing venue?

Doomed because this WOULD NOT, by any stretch of the imagination,
benefit cricket in the USA. It's sole, solitary, objective is to make $$$
for CA and BCCI. It's studio cricket, for TV audiences
back in Bandiland and India. No American would even know the matches
are taking place, wouldn't care, and CA and BCCI couldn't care less
if they did. Thanks, but no thanks. We need legitimate cricket PROMOTION, not
mercenaries looking to take a quick buck off the Yanks.

BTW: this will never come off for the simple reason the Maryland Mugabe and his
USACA cronies would want their cut, and a big one at that. Project USA was killed for this
very reason and it'll continuue to kill any dreams of holding first-class matches in
this country.

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

if this happens i'm flying to wherever it is happening to watch.

would any places in SoCal work? the LA Coliseum used to host Dodger games when they first moved to LA, don't know if it would work for cricket, but you could seat a lot of people.

pics of the setup for baseball can be found here:

The San Diego Polo Club is a HUGE area and could easily host a cricket match or two at the same time.

BTW, for you rugby fans, the USA Sevens are in San Diego in Feb. Should be a blast!
i totally forgot about Polo Grounds. that would work with Temp stands built around an oval. hmmmmm.....

Sure...if CA and BCCI want to come up with $200K per match, which is what it'd cost them to rent it per day.

Yeah...and if your grandma's got a big back yard that would work too. If MLB/NFL wanted to stage matches
in Australia do you think they'd even THINK of
playing anywhere except top-of-the-line venues?

Re: India and Australia may play ODI series in New York

Seems like this is unlikely to get off the ground anytime soon. Cricinfo has described the USACA as "dysfunctional" and there seems to be a lack of suitable venues for the matches to be played.

Drop-in pitches are no good either as the USA has strict rules about moving soil/turf between states.

http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/usa/content/current/story/277370.html

This is definitely a blow to getting cricket started in the USA. It seems that this series won't happen till at least 2008.
