Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Canada is playing their fourth match already in the current 2007-08 Intercontinental Cup, while Namibia is finally playing their first match. Canada probably needs to win this match if they have any realistic hopes of winning this competition. Namibia, on the other hand, are probably looking forward to seeing how well they can do against one of the teams they will be targetting in the next World Cup Qualifier.

Namibia
AJ Burger, R van Schoor, M Durant, G Snyman, BL Kotze, DB Kotze, NRP Scholtz, T Verwey, KB Burger, MC van Zyl, L Klazinga

Canada
Abdul Jabbar, Mohammad Iqbal, TC Bastiampillai, Qaiser Ali, AL Kandappah, A Shamshudeen, S Dhaniram, J Patraj, U Bhatti, D Soraine, H Osinde

Namibia won the toss and chose to bat first.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Canada got off to a fair start in the first half of the day, picking up 5 wickets for 135 runs in the first 39 overs. Durand Soraine picked up three of those wickets for Canada.

But Scholtz, Bjorn Kotze, and Verwey proved much tougher for the Canadian bowlers to handle. Nicholaas Scholtz was eventually out for 64, making the score 229-6, but Bjorn Kotze and Tobias Verwey played out the final 19 overs of the day quite strongly, not only holding onto their wicket, but scoring a fairly quick 85 runs too.

Kotze is on 87 and Verwey is on 49 heading into tomorrow.

Namibia is 314-6, and Canada will need to break these two up early if they are to have any chance at winning this match. As it stands, Namibia will be hoping to reach 400, which will give them a good shot at the six first innings points at least. There's still a long ways to go in this match though. We'll see how the Canadian batsmen fare against the home team's bowlers.

Day 2 is underway.

Verwey out for 61,
Namibia 333-7

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Kola Burger had joined Bjorn Kotze in the middle, and Burger is actually adding the majority of the runs so far.

Namibia 362-7, and their position is growing stronger with each run.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Bjorn Kotze made it all the way to 163 not out, and maybe he just got tired of batting, because Namibia declared at 480-9. Soraine and Dhaniram each took 3 wickets for the Canadians in that innings.

In response, Canada is 233-4 at stumps on day 2. The opener Mohammad Iqbal is still in there on 119. Namibia still has the advantage, but as long as Iqbal stays in there, Canada will feel like they have a chance at putting up a high score.

With only 2 days to go, there now seems to be a chance that neither team will win this match. Namibia is heavy favorite to pick up the 6 points for a first innings lead though. Canada needs 98 runs to avoid the follow-on. I suppose if they manage to just beat that with a little over 100 runs, Namibia could still bat quickly and then put Canada in and have the entirety of day 4 to try to bowl them out.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Canada collapsed to be all out for 286. They were forced to follow on and are now 2/92.

Snyman took 4 for Namibia.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Canada finished Day 3 at 235-6.

They now lead by 41 runs, but at this rate they'll be lucky to make Namibia score more than 100 to win. Barring a weather interruption, it looks like Namibia should have the full 20 points wrapped up.

One bright spot for Canada is Mohammad Iqbal though. Not only was he the top scorer for Canada with 140 in their first innings, but he scored another 88 runs in their second innings, which will also likely be their top score barring a miracle today.

Up and coming young star Louis Klazinga has picked up 5 wickets so far for Namibia, while Snyman and van Zyl each have four.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Canada all out for 295, Namibia needs a mere 102 runs to win.

Klazinga wound up taking one more wicket, but Snyman took the other three.

Re: Intercontinental Cup: Namibia v Canada at Windhoek

Namibia got home quite easily, scoring 102-2 in 20.1 overs. Snyman finished it off by scoring 38 runs from 15 balls.

Namibia has taken the full 20 points.

Code:
               P W D L Pts
Netherlands 3 2 0 1 34
Ireland 2 1 1 0 29
Canada 4 1 0 3 26
Scotland 3 1 2 0 26
Kenya 1 1 0 0 20
Namibia 1 1 0 0 20
UAE 2 0 1 1 3
Bermuda 2 0 0 2 0

Canada has pretty much been eliminated from this competition now. It would take a whole lot of rain-outs and draws for them to finish anywhere near the top of the table.

The next match starts up in a few days between Kenya and Bermuda. Kenya will of course be looking to move into first place with another 20 points.
