Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

Scotland's big match with UAE gets underway today. I think it's already started, but I'm having trouble finding a score.

Anyway, if Scotland gets a full 20-point win, they'll clinch a spot in the final against Canada.

Ah, just found the score.

UAE won the toss and chose to bat.

UAE is 15-1 after 6 overs.

Wow, what a one-sided day this turned out to be! Scotland's hopes to make the final took a major blow, while both Ireland and the UAE must be feeling more optimistic now.

UAE finished day 1 at 271-3.

A fairly shocking result for UAE, considering they got hammered by Namibia last month.

Scotland will really need to pick it up if they want to go to the finals. Does anyone know what the tiebreaker is if two teams are tied on points? I believe if Ireland wins only the first innings against UAE, they could end up even with Scotland in the group standings.

Did anyone have live-ish scores at all? What time zone is UAE?

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

Interesting to see the difference home ground advantage seems to have in this group.
Namibia looked outclassed in Ireland and Scotland then fantastic in their own back yard against UAE.
UAE now seem to be on top against Scotland, though it is still only the first day, so it could still turn around.
it also shows that there is still not much daylight between any of the top Associates which bodes well for the competition's future.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

Day 2 going much better for Scotland.

The remaining 7 wickets fell quickly, and UAE was all out for 348.

Scotland still has a chance here. They'll need to start by scoring 349 runs to take the 6 points for leading after the first innings.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

It is beginning to look as though this will end in a draw. By the sounds of it, it could have been very different had the Scots held their catches on day 1.
there is still the outside possibility of a win, but mainly I think if Scotland can post a defendable lead by the end of their first innings.
They were still 169 adrift with 7 wickets in hand at the end of day 2.
Ireland must be licking their lips at the prospect that their Intercontinental Cup campaign will again be back in their hands.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

Scotland finished Day 2 at 179-3 after 59 overs.

It is now lunch on Day 3, and Scotland is 300-5 after 90 overs.

So they need 49 more runs to pick up those 6 first innings points.
It was obviously a pretty good scoring morning for Scotland. Barring a collapse, they'll have the first innings lead before tea. If they can keep their wickets, their lead should be in the range of 150 or maybe even more like 180 by the end of the day. From there, they'll need to declare and hope they can bowl UAE out quickly tomorrow. With any luck, they'll only need about 50 or 100 runs in the last hour of play tomorrow.

That said, if I were in charge, I might declare a little sooner today. I'd say bat as quickly as possible after lunch, and as soon as the lead reaches 125, or maybe even as low as 100, declare and make UAE bat today.

All of a sudden, it looks like we might be heading for a thrilling ending to this match. Sure, it could still end in a draw, but Scotland will be putting UAE under heavy pressure now.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

Scotland ended all out for 373, good for a 25 run first innings lead (and the 6 bonus point that come with it). THey had a bit of a scare as the 9th wicket fell with the scores even, but they managed to push through it well enough. At close of play, UAE had reached 157/1, making it look like a very drawy match. UAE need the win in the standings, however, so look for them to make a somewhat aggressive declaration.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

This definitely looks like a draw now. A whole lot of wickets would need to fall to get a result.

As for UAE, they've just been eliminated!!!
Take a look at the points table coming into the match:

Code:
Group A P WO WI D LI LO T Points
Scotland 2 1 - 1 - - - 29
Ireland 2 1 - 1 - - - 23
Namibia 3 1 - - - 2 - 20
United Arab Emirates 1 - - - - 1 - 0

So Scotland just picked up 6 points for a first innings led, putting them at 35. The most UAE could get from this match and the Ireland match is 14 + 20 = 34. So UAE was officially eliminated earlier today.

(Think about that for a second. UAE could BEAT both Scotland and Ireland and they still wouldn't advance to the final. It obviously won't happen, but it strikes me that this new points system still has some flaws in it! Should "outright wins" be the first determinant in the standings instead of points?)

Assuming this match ends in a draw and Scotland stays at 35 points, Ireland will need 12 points in the last match to advance to play Canada in the final. The only way to get that many points is to get an outright win. (Ireland doesn't even need the first innings lead, they just need the 14 points for being the winner at the end of day 4.)

Wilbix, earlier in this thread you asked about tiebreakers if 2 teams are tied on points. (Which obviously won't happen now that Scotland got an extra 6 points, but I looked up the answer anyway.) The answer from the ICC website is:

the following order of priority:
a) most outright wins
b) highest net runs per wicket ratio

The system might make a little more sense if instead of going by points and having wins be a tiebreaker, they ranked teams by wins and had points as a tiebreaker.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Scotland v UAE, Jan 11-14

As expected, the match ended in a draw.

UAE declared at 356-8. Scotland had a target of 332, with only about half a day to reach it. Paul Hoffman got off to a fast start, scoring 48 from 32 balls, but a few other wickets fell fairly quickly, and Scotland soongave up any hope of winning and just batted out to the end. They finished 137-6 after 45.3 overs.

So Scotland sit on 35 points right now, 12 ahead of Ireland. It's nice that the final group stage match will be a meaningful one.
