IPL 'to be played outside from India'
AAP - March 22, 2009, 8:54 pm

India's cricket board says next month's Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, involving many of Australia's top players, will be moved away from India because of security concerns.

Cricket South Africa chief Gerald Majola has confirmed the Proteas have been approached to run the six-week event, while England has also emerged as a candidate to host the second annual Twenty20 tournament featuring the world's top players.

Majola had denied on Saturday that an official approach had been made.

"We received an official approach this morning to be one of several options they are considering to host the tournament outside India," Majola said on Sunday in a statement.

"We do not know what the other options are and it is not for us to comment on that.

"At this stage we are looking forward to holding discussions with IPL officials to discuss the proposal in detail.

"It is a huge compliment to Cricket South Africa's organisational skills, facilities and infrastructure that we are being asked to host another major international event."

The ICC's Champions Trophy one-day tournament, which was to be held in Pakistan last year and had been tentatively moved to Sri Lanka for 2009, has also been shifted to South Africa and will be held in September.

The Rainbow Nation also successfully hosted the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in 2007.

Australians playing in the IPL include Brett Lee, Mike Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson and Simon Katich as well as retired stars Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Matt Hayden and Glenn McGrath.

Skipper Ricky Ponting, vice-captain Michael Clarke and fast bowler Mitch Johnson have all decided not to play this year.

Pace spearhead Lee, 32, has skipped Australia's Test tour of South Africa this month to recover from foot and ankle injuries.

"As long as he actually plays some cricket, I think that's the main thing," Lee's agent Neil Maxwell told AAP on Sunday when asked if the uncertainty over where the event would be played was unsettling for the pace bowler.

"It's better to err on the side of safety."

Players' associations from across the cricketing world are concerned about security following recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai and Lahore, where the Sri Lankan team bus was sprayed by a gang armed with machine guns.

National elections in India next month are placing a huge strain on the security resources available to the IPL to offer protection to cricketers.

"Under the given circumstances, the BCCI is not in a position to either play a truncated IPL or to cancel the second edition of the IPL," the Indian board said on Sunday in a statement.

"It is a matter of great regret that, in the prevailing atmosphere, where the government is expressing concern for providing security to the IPL matches, the BCCI is left with no other option but to conduct the Indian Premier League in another country."

South African Cricketers' Association chief Tony Irish said in a front-page article in Saturday's Weekend Argus newspaper in Cape Town that he understood discussions had been taking place between Cricket South Africa and the IPL and they had been "favourable".

Cricket Australia spokesman Phillip Pope says any comment is a matter for the Indian board.

"Our focus is on the series in South Africa and the upcoming one-day series in the UAE against Pakistan," Pope told AAP.

Re: IPL moved to sth Africa

Why can't it come to Aus?
Don't think were hosting any big tournaments and i reckon we'll get big crowds over here.

Re: IPL moved to sth Africa

i heard on the radio that Australias climate isnt suitable to grow turf that time of the year. certainly the southern states wouldnt be anyway. so its out of SA and the UK, id prefer the UK as it will give our ashes players a chance to adjust to the conditions.

Re: IPL moved to sth Africa

it would have been good for england to host the ipl but really it is common sense to have south africa host it, anyone who has tried to play cricket in the uk in april knows how bad our weather is

Re: IPL moved to sth Africa

I was hoping the same that the IPl wold be played in UK.
The players would have benefitted from the exprience as the next 20/20 World Cup is in UK.
But Weather conditions in SA are much better than UK.
