IPL signings anger Cricket Australia

Cricket Australia has told 11 Australian players including Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist it is disappointed with them for signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would allow them to play in the Indian Premier League. The IPL Twenty20 tournament is officially sanctioned by the ICC and in October it was announced that Ponting, Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden were among an extensive list of Australian players to have signed up.

But according to a report in the Sun-Herald James Sutherland, Cricket Australia's chief executive, has written to the players to express his frustration at their actions. The paper obtained a copy of the letter in which Sutherland said he was disappointed Cricket Australia had not been consulted prior to the signing of the MOUs.

It seems like the Australians aren't happy unless they are moaning about something in the cricket world. It's a bit late for Sutherland to complain now, a number of months after the news that these players had signed up was announced.

Didn't he think to say 'Hold on, lets talk about this' then? Or did it suddenly dawn on him last week?

I really don't see the players pulling out (would upset the BCCI) and the ACB are hardly going to drop the likes of Glichrist, Hayden and Ponting.

Trouble is, that this tournament is on when the tour of Pakistan is on, so they'd have to miss the tour of Pakistan to play in this tournament.

The ICL manager was saying the same thing that the international players schedule will conflict with IPL and IPL will suffer because the players will prefer to play for their country

Can't see the Australian players playing in the IPL instead of representing their country. The IPL should be planned according to the international calendar because the international stars won't play if they are on national duty.

Re: IPL signings anger Cricket Australia

I'm sure the Aussie players get paid a hell of a lot more to play for Australia than they do for the IPL. None of them will play for club over country as it is so competitive in the aussie team.

Untrue.

Australians signed to long-term IPL contracts would get at least $150,000 a year to play 14 Twenty20 games over a 40-day period in India.

But some of Australia's top players could see their IPL incomes balloon to more than $1 million with extra payments for promotions and marketing engagements.

This is on top of their Cricket Australia contracts, which are worth a minimum of $140,000. But the real money is made in endorsement revenue: Ponting's yearly take is believed to be more like $4 million.

The Sunday Age revealed last month that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had paid $2 million to sign the Australian players for the IPL

Re: IPL signings anger Cricket Australia

Doesnt that say the aussies earn $4m to play for australia and $2m to play in India?

Re: IPL signings anger Cricket Australia

They don't earn $2 million to play for IPL. I believe its the total money that IPL spent in signing all the Australian players. Neither do they all earn $4 million to play for Australia thats just Pontings income. But IPL gives them easy money. They don't have to put much effort to earn it which is the prime reason why they signed up for it. There is nothing wrong with earning money if they don't skip national duty for it.

Endorsements are from companies, not CA.
