Knee Pain

Knee Pain

Hi Liz,

I have a problem regarding my left Knee pain.
From last 2- 3 days; after batting for 10-15 mins in the nets; i have a pain on my left knee joint.
The pain is not severely painful but i am not able to bat any longer as the mind is constantly thinking about it.
While bowling not much of difference; but while batting the pain is felt.
FYI; I am a right hand batsmen and a left arm spinner.
After my practice session; i apply ice pack on it for about 10-15 mins.the pain is relived for the moment and after about 1/2 hr so i apply a pain reliever cream.
Pls help me out.

Re: Knee Pain

Sounds like a touch of patella tendinitis/tendinopathy. Try strapping around this area [you can get special tapes for this at good pharmacies]. Just one band below the knee, between the patella and trochanter (where the tendon attaches to the tibia (leg bone)). The strap reduces the cross sectional area of the patella tendon; less force can be transmitted from the quadricep muscles to the patella tendon; reducing the stress placed on the Patella tendon!

When it gets sore, still apply ice packs wrapped in a towel and avoid heat treatments. You could take anti inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen but bear in mind that the jury is still out on whether inflammation is the cause.

Most importantly, you should warm up thoroughly prior to activity and have a proper cool down; stretching the muscles in your legs before they lose heat and cool shortened.

If you drive a manual transmission, you may find depressing the clutch may irritate this area. If so, wear the strap whilst driving too.

I hope this helps Virender but please come back to me if this is not working.

Re: Knee Pain

Thanks Liz,For how many days the strapping/medication be done.
During those days what sort of cricketing activities/exercises be carried out (For ex: bowling or batting in nets).

Re: Knee Pain

Sorry to hijack the thread but I too have bad knee pains.

I'll give you all the details.

  • The pain is intermittant in that it comes for two weeks, goes for a month, comes for two weeks, goes for six months etc... This process has happened since I was about 10.
  • The pain is throughout my knees upon impact of the ground when I run
  • During days when it hurts, the top of the shin bone (bottom middle of the knee) is very sensitive.
  • When it hurts, it pains especially to go up and down stairs.
  • I do single leg step squats to help combat the pain but they are not instant and it really is a nuisance.
  • When I do them, the left leg is noticeably weaker but whilst I am running, the two legs have equal pain

I assure those who I am starting to annoy with my persistant fitness problems that it is just my knee and side which are my problems.

Re: Knee Pain

Manee, it sounds like Osgood Schlatters!

Have a look at the following link:
http://www.physioroom.com/injuries/knee/osgood_schlatters_disease_full.php

I am afraid total rest is not practical for you so do knee strap it.

Although I have suggested the same course of action for Virender, it is not the same problem.

If it is Osgood Schlatters [and I can never give a full proof diagnosis without seeing you guys] it will not last for ever :)

I am still concerned about your right leg so do still post videos when/if you can.

Not going nets today (my birthday) but will post videos next week.

It may be Osgood Schlatter's but it has been on and off pain since I was 10 and besides the patella, there is no lump. I went to a physio a little while back but by then, it had been five months since the pain (damn NHS) and so the symptons I described were not accurate, her diagnosis was that it was 'mechanical', though I am not sure what that meant.

Osgood Schlatters starts at about the age of 9/10 and is more noticeable during growth spurts. Lumps are not always discernable. The condition is usually gone by the age of 17/18.

You do have a problem with mechanics [the reason why I would like to see your videos] but I am not convinced that this is the problem with your left knee! You need to see a sports therapist, not a physio. I am afraid that, although great at what they do, their knowledge is limited.

Re: Knee Pain

I'm happy that it is usually gone by 17/18. Taken a close look at your website diagram of Osgood Schlatter's and realise now that I do have a small lump of bone there but that is not all...

The left knee is weaker than the right but...

In times of pain, the region in the middle of the right lump (or perhaps patella muscle) is very sensative to touch whereas the left is merely sensative to a hard hit (I'll go down like a light if hit in the patella, lump or side of the knee tbh) and is fine when touched.

In times of calm with my knees, both knees are as I described the left.

There is a sticky out part of a bone on the outside of both my legs in line with the lump but the physio I had said it is nothing, I am not convinced.

Re: Knee Pain

I do not think you should be overly concerned Manee. I am 99% sure you have Osgood Schlatters. The occasions of most pain being whilst you are experiencing growing spurts. It will stop when you are fully grown.

I think I know what is causing the extra pain with your right knee, which will effect your ankle and hip if not corrected but I will get back to you when I have seen your videos.

Should I buy a strap for my right knee (pain when running and after), my left knee (weak, pain when running) or both?

Re: Knee Pain

Buy one strap for your left knee and see if it makes any difference. If it does, you can buy one for your right but wait until I have seen your videos. I am not sure it will help your right knee much; you may need a brace until you have rectified the mechanics.

Of course, the best course of action would be complete rest. I doubt that will be an option [even though I highly recommend it :D] so make sure you ice your knees when you are suffering.

Re: Knee Pain

Sorry, I did not have a camera so could not video my action but I had a good session and my knees felt fine throughout, they are a bit sore now but some freeze spray will help that.

I will purchase the knee supports you linked to, the ones which cover your whole knee are very uncomfortable and restricting for me. Birthday money will easily cover the cost of the knee straps and I hope they stop the pain.

Re: Knee Pain

No worries Manee, I'm so glad you had a good session with not too much of a problem to your knees. Just buy one strap for your left knee, if it works then you can buy another one for your right knee, though, I am not sure it will work as well for your right knee.

Thanks Liz.
I will update u about the progress in couple of weeks :)
As per the given advice;I followed and found the Knee to be in much better condition.
There seems to be no discomfort and the ice pack and knee strap helped a lot.
Thanks a lot Liz for the guidance
:)
Should I continue to use the Knee Strap
