Knee Pain

Re: Knee Pain

Well, just as things are going swimmingly and finally I have a week where I can concentrate on cricket I go and bust myself up. Again.

Fielding practice prior to nets today we were doing this thing where the keeper rolls the ball away from him and you chase after it, pick it up and throw it back to him. One of your routine pick ups next to your right leg chasing back and my left foot slips, the right foot stays put and my knee gets forced up so it's really really bent up. Like a kinda really acute angle if you know what I mean. It sort of went 'bang' and I lay there for a while. I had a walk around and bowled one ball of like 2 paces really slow but it wasn't too good. I lay around for the rest of the nets and had a 5 min bat at the end. I managed to twist it a bit at the end of the session and came out of the nets straight away.

At the moment it feels stiff and quite sore but not that sore. The pain is at the front of the knee, on the inside and not on the surface (ie doesnt hurt if you poke it) except in one really small place more on the inside of the knee. A guy who's a paramedic just said rest it up and it might've been cartilage but I thought I'd ask on here just to check. At the moment I'm hoping it's better for sunday, is that realistic??

Is that rhetorical? :D

Could be the cartilage, meniscus or tendon. Is it right on/behind the knee cap? I hope the paramedic iced it and compressed it for you. If not, don't wait a minute longer and keep it elevated.

You really should have called it a day when this happened.

Re: Knee Pain

It's not near the kneecap. We didn't have any ice anywhere.

I was lying on the floor for basically all of the net session and I've kept it elevated as much as I can since then.

By the rhetorical thing I presume you mean it won't be??

Re: Knee Pain

It's about an inch below the bottom of the kneecap on the inside of the right leg. It's quite hard to describe cos its hard to pinpoint as it just feels sort of achey and occaisionally acutely sore if I bend the knee too much.

EDIT: sorry I'm gonna have to go now, I'll be back on tomorrow though, thanks very much for your help :)

Re: Knee Pain

Medial collateral ligament.

Rhetorical means... you really shouldn't try... but I know you will ;)

Ice it and if it is inflammed, take some ibuprofen. Rest it as much as possible but mobilise it every now and again.

Please bear in mind that the stability of the knee is compromised. Tape it if you really must try.

Re: Knee Pain

It's not inflamed, so I guess that's a good thing :p

Ibuprofen and resting with occaisional walking around shouldn't be too hard to sort out. Does resting it mean having it elevated??

Yeah, I noticed it wasn't too stable when I got up this morning, especially when you try and straighten the leg while you're standing!! My mum's a doctor so I might be under orders not to try, but if I do I'll definitely tape it or wear some kind of support. What sort of time would you estimate for full recovery??

Re: Knee Pain

Yes, its great if its not inflammed but keep an eye on it.

Elevated it when resting but not with your knee locked. Even when resting (non weight bearing) mobilise the knee; flex and extend. Remember, knees do not rotate ;) Also mobilise the hips and ankles (all both legs) to help the muscles that are having to overcompensate.

As for recovery, I'm afraid we are talking weeks not days (at least two); unless of course you do something silly [like play], then we are talking months :D

Re: Knee Pain

Good call; look after it and you may be playing next week. The problem with issues with the knee ligaments is lack of stability. This makes your anterior cruciate ligament ("ATC") very vulnerable. If this goes, it could be the end of your shining career, rugby as well as cricket. Get your Mum to described the surgery needed to correct the ATC; you'll know you definitely made the right call.

Good luck with it ;)

Re: Knee Pain

My mum has had a look/feel at it and she agrees that it's a ligament thing. It's apparently a little bit inflamed so we've put Biofreeze on it. She did some bending/poking things to it that mean it's deffo not cartilage and it's not too bad a ligament pull either.

Current thinking is that I might go down to training on friday to see how it holds up because next saturday is a big game for the 2nd XI.

Thanks for all the help and I'll concentrate on being nice to it for a while :D

Re: Knee Pain

A good plan. You may like to give it a little support [belt and braces] if you feel you can play Saturday. A little taping just to support the MCL will do. This not only gives the added stability but peace of mind too.

If you remember, let me know next week what you decided to do and how it went.

Re: Knee Pain

Sure, and yeah I think strapping will be the name of the game ;)

At the moment it's not too bad, just gets stiff from time to time and sometimes I bend it too far cos I forget about it ::)

Re: Knee Pain

OK, I went down to the nets tonight with some support on my knee and tried it out. First up, fielding practice and I was jogging/running on it ok, just not sprinting. Then I went for a bowl, started off a couple of paces and worked up. It was going alright up until I started using my full delivery stride then it started to twinge a bit, so I stopped. Up to about 60% effort it was ok though.

I'm not playing tomorrow but at the moment I'm pretty sure it'll be fine for next week.

Re: Knee Pain

Sounds good JB. Look after it and I'm sure it will be fine for next week too but test it out again just in case.
