Make way for China?

Make way for China?

An under-15 cricket tournament organised by the Asian Cricket Council in Bangkok last week saw China reach the semi-finals stage in the lower division of the tournament. While that may not surprise die-hard cricket followers who know how the game is gaining in popularity in China, it is a significant indication of how fast the Chinese have taken to the game.

Now, to take them to the next level, the Chinese are looking at their cricket-mad neighbours to provide them with able coaches. It has been reliably learnt that Chinese diplomats in Delhi have been sounded out to scout for coaches in India.

Probably in 100 years China will be a 'powerhouse' but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Cricket in China will take a back seat with a lot of future prospects wanting to be the next Yao Ming or Olympic gymnastic gold medallist where the financial rewards are infinitely greater than cricket.

Oh yeah, I don't think it is going to happen today, tomorrow, or even in the next couple of years. I just found it interesting that China of all nations, decided to throw their hat in the ring, so to speak.

To help get the game there to grow why can't a 20/20 comp like the Indian Cricket League be formed? TV exposure would be enormous especially if retired greats were invited to play, eg. Warne, Lara, McGrath. Maybe even a ODI between two countries.
