Hayden to return home

Australia received a jolt ahead of the second Test with the news of Matthew Hayden returning home after not recovering sufficiently from an injury to his right Achilles tendon. Australia missed Hayden in the first Test in Jamaica, especially in the second innings where they collapsed to 18 for 5 before recovering to score 167.

"Matthew Hayden's right Achilles tendon injury has not made sufficient progress during his time in the West Indies and as such he will not be able to participate in the second Test and was highly unlikely to be available for the third Test," Alex Kountouris, the physiotherapist of the side, said in a statement. "With the large volume of cricket to be played over the next 18 months it was decided he should return to Australia to undergo rehabilitation and consult specialists. This means he will not be available for the five one-day internationals against the West Indies."

Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of the selection panel, said Brad Hodge will remain with the side, "which is richly deserved given his strong performance in the first Test". He said the selectors will be meeting in the next few days to discuss Hayden's replacement for the subsequent one-day series.

The second Test of the three-match series starts on May 30 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

This is devastating news for the Australian team, with the collapse in the second innings we all saw how much Matthew Hayden is needed in the batting line up for stability. I wonder how the odds will change for the next test match knowing that Hayden is back in Brisbane.

Re: Matthew Hayden to return home.

Looks like Hodge will be staying in the team and Katich dropped?

Or the logical course would be Katich open and clarke comes in for Hodge

Re: Matthew Hayden to return home.

Bad news for Hayden. Katich will open up in the second test in my opinion, I don't think the selectors will drop him after just one test back in the side.

Clarke will come in for Hodge I'd say despite Hodge having a decent first test. If Katich doesn't perform in the second test however, I'd say the selectors would have a serious think about dropping him for the thirs test should he not go well again. Kat has to have a good series here to keep his name on the radar and to keep the contenders for his position at bay.

Hayden's injury opens the door for Shaun Marsh to open the batting in the one-dayers. In fact, he is a good chance now, the only other opener in the squad is James Hopes unless they use Clarke as an opener which is unlikely. Australia might have to keep Jaques with them for the one-dayers.

Re: Matthew Hayden to return home.

bit unlucky for Haydos, but it gives Kat a chance, which i hope he can hold onto.

unlucky for Hodge, but them's the breaks.

Hayden's just getting a bit old isn't he - still a fantastic player, but his age is showing

Agree with everything you've said- saved me a post in fact! :D

Marsh in the IPL surely would've written his name into the one day opening spot. @|

The selectors would have to be flipping crazy not too look at whats going on over in India. Knowing them though it will take him another 2 great seasons to get a crack at the highest level

Re: Matthew Hayden to return home.

Serves the old money hungry ************** right, should have retired from one day cricket by now but he keeps chasing the money then off to the IPL and out of test cricket

That is the worst call that I've possibly ever heard. If he was "money hungry" he would of retired when the IPL started and picked up his full pay packet.

Matthew Hayden

Allan Border Medal - 2002
Test Player of the Year - 2002
Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2003
ICC One-Day Player of the Year 2007
One-Day International Player of the Year - 2008

In the last Test Series that Australia played Hayden made 3 centuries in the 3 games.

124, 47, 13, 123, 103.

Once again, the worst call i have ever heard.

Eddie just wishes England had someone of that quality opening the batting, a great servent for Australian cricket

Umm, he makes more money playing both forms of the game for Australia than playing in the IPL, he would lose abit of money however if he dropped out of one day cricket and then played in the IPL as well adding to his already earnt $1million despite not being 100% fit and ends up missing Australian games

Yes he is a very good player but at his age he should have made the decision so many others have in the past and given one day cricket away after the world cup to focus on 1 form of the game, then he probably wouldnt have all these injury problems and wouldnt be screwing up Australias batting lineup when he has to constantly miss games

Once again, the worst call in history. A player gets injured and considering his towards the end of his career thats understandable.

Yet there would have been alot less likelihood of injury if he rested rather than play all those meaningless one dayers and the IPL chasing money

He has now missed 5/6 tests after having played non stop for years and this injury he has been carrying for a while but chose to play through it instead of resting, not a bad luck injury at all and one prevented if he wasnt so money hungry

Matthew Hayden is doing a great service for Australia playing in both forms of the game. He played 4 IPL games over in India. I highly doubt it was the 4 T20 games he played that caused him the injury that he has know. It's 3 hours of cricket for crying out loud.

If Fred Flintoff plays IPL next year and gets another injury will you blame him for being money hungry ?

I think you just made a ridiculous statement. This is the same guy who introduced the pink batting grip in Australia in support of breast cancer. And guess what he didn't get paid a cent for it ?

His obviously real sore, because this is the same guy who played through a world cup with a fractured toe and a broken bone in his foot. He played something like 86 tests in a row before missing the game down at the WACA last year with his hammy getting sore.

Also, i think the Australia team that we have atm, is capable of winning this series against the 8th ranked WI without Matthew Hayden. Hence why the docs sent him back home before we have a big schedual of games over the next 18 months. With the Champs trophy and a tour of India coming up.

They reckon he could of played in the One Day games this series, but why ? Just rest the guy and give him some time to get over his injury. We could blood a player like Shaun Marsh and that would be a great learning experience for him whilst looking after our future.

Just a really bad call, don't you wish you just had an opener like Matthew Hayden ? :p

Money hungry, lol.

Re: Matthew Hayden to return home.

Surely the only thing that matters in one day cricket is the World Cup, so why does he keep playing when there is no chance of being there for the next one? Yes Australia can blood someone now, but then he goes out again for the old man in India? Why not retire and let Australia find their permanent opening pair? Or is it because he would lose too much money?

Oh and thats why Flintoff will be denied any request he makes to play in the IPL

Dude, his not playing for the money. He can retire from cricket and play a full season of IPL and get heaps of cash plus so many endorsements from India. So just get over the idea of him being money hungry it is possibly the stupidest thing i have heard.

He is continuing to play in the ODI team because he wants to and is doing so very successfully. I think his making up for lost time that he had when he went into the wilderness and scored a gazillion runs for Queensland in the Sheffield Sheild.

Ok, maybe Flintoff was a bad example. How about KP ? Should he not play IPL because he has a lingering injury that might flare up again sometime in the future ? I don't think so.

Re: Matthew Hayden to return home.

Using English players to compare is hard lightning.

They are all contracted to the ECB and their county sides. I believe that nearly anyone with an ECB contract wasn't allowed to nominate due to international commitments and the selectors prefering them to concentrate on county cricket.

That is why there is talk of creating a an English IPL-esk competition.

Ahk, the only reason i pulled an English player up because Eddiesmith is a POME right ?

Still, the worst call of all time !
