Michael Clarke Announces Retirement After This Ashes Series

He's definitely right to pay out on Symonds though, ffs rocking up pissed to play for Australia..
Don't disagree that Symonds stuffed up, after all this is the modern professional era not the days of Chappell and walters where the twelth man was sent back to the hotel to wake Dougy up because he was next in during a tour of South Africa. Oh and he went on to make a ton.
The break down with Symonds and Clarke came earlier and is rooted in earlier issues. Clarke was despised among many of the experienced players and shows by his best mate being Warne.
The end came in Darwin when Symonds went fishing rather than train for Clarke in his first series as captain in 2008, but don't discount the effect that the Sydney Test and Clarke,s behaviour during that game and the lack of support over the monkey comments.
The complete failure of the ACB to standup to the BCCI over that issue and demand an apology and have Singh recalled home as punishment was the reason Symonds turned on them. While Ponting was there he was manageable but Clarke was a joke too far for many.

Not many do (in cricket circles anyway). Most of the Blackcaps didn't like him when he was over here in management..
Yes it was not really the job for Buchanan to pull the team together. Don't get me wrong, as good a team as it was that would only have made the job that much harder but Steve Waugh was a very tough task master and was able to keep Warne in his box, even MacGill didn't like Waugh but had to suck it up he was a tyrant and that was required. Punter was respected by his team and that carried him but not quite with the success but when Clarke came in the wheels fell off and there was no respect for the captain. Discipline fell to pieces and without doubt the ship was righted by Boof. So different time different needs, i hope Smith proves to be a very tough Captain in the Border mould, Australian cricket needs it right now.
