The third match of the tri-series goes tomorrow morning, and will go a long way to deciding how important the second half of the series will be. A Kenya win will put them at least 5 points clear, and in commanding position to win the series. A Canada win would give each of the teams a 1-1 record, and leave it all to play for in the second half.

Kenya have to be the favourite, if for no other reason than their having beaten Scotland handily, and Canada having lost to the Scots in a close match yesterday. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Match to begin at 0730 GMT

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

I'm interested to see the Kenyan line up for this one.
Question is do we retain Ouma at wicketkeeper and hope he comes good with the bat, or do we open with Shah and Dave Obuya (wkt) with Malhar Patel coming in at first drop.
I hope if we do make any changes, it is only one player at a time. I like the way the team is operating as a whole at the moment.
Hard to see any bowlers being changed after last match.

Kenya should make it 2 from 2 today, even given that the Canadians have now had time to acclimatise.

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

Unless he is hurt, I think Bhatti has to return to the lineup for Canada.

By the way, does the Cricket Kenya have a crest/logo? I couldn't find one anywhere, so I just went with the flag.

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

The CCA's website is reporting that Canada will be forfeiting the match against Kenya as they are unable to field a team. Of their 15 man squad, one player is yet to arrive, one is hurt, and 4 are suffering from heat exhaustion/dehydration. No mention of who it is, but apparently there will be no game today.

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

Wow, that's unbelievable! (and terrible)

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

On the bright side, I get to sleep rather than trying to time 5 minute naps with the score updates on CE.

Still very disappointing, you have to wonder how much of it was flying in so shortly before the first match. Flying tends to dehydrate you a bit in itself, and then going out into the hot sun for a day makes it that much worse. The only good, it seems, is that it happened during the tri-series rather than the more important WCL later on.

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

Look at this article from cricketeurope:
Even more insufferable than Australia

It's Paul Hoffman's report from their first match against Kenya.
He says some players lost 5 kilograms that day!!!!

Wilbix and Bluto and other midwesterners might be familiar with this place, but a little over a decade ago, I lost about 5-6 pounds one day at Cedar Point! It was a long hot day with lots of walking and lots of baking in the sun, and obviously not enough eating and rehydration.

Considering that Canada got in much later than Scotland for this series, they obviously had much less time to acclimatise. Hopefully they'll be ready for their next match.

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

Not sure where Cedar Point is exactly, but I've had some sweaty days playing rugby in the summer where I'm sure I've dropped 4-5 pounds of water. And that was probably only around 30C (plus humid). I cannot fathom what it would be like at 38 with a high humidity. Luckily Nairobi is much less severe than Mombasa.

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

If Kenya were made a Full Member, and played tests in Mombasa, they'd have a good shot at winning a test against the likes of England, New Zealand, or Pakistan.

If their players are ready and prepared for the weather, that could be a gigantic home-field advantage.

Right on the shore of Lake Erie, halfway between Toledo and Cleveland. You can see clear across to Canada from the tops of some of their roller coasters.

By the way, lets hope Darrell Hair doesn't get blamed for this forfeit.

Seriously, what were the odds of him being involved in another forfeit? And so soon too!!!

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

Pretty poor effort.

One would have thought that as a professional outfit, Canada would have done their homework better on the conditions and either arrived in time to acclimatise and addressed the dehydration/heat factor. A poor reflection of the management of their administrators and proffesionalism of their support staff. Even the players themselves should take some blame. It is not rocket science that in extreme conditions, you keep the fluids up, wear hats, sunscreen etc. I hope heads roll.

A real let down. I don't think you would ever see a Full member team forfeit an ODI for a reason like this. It says a lot about how far behind Associate cricket is that this is allowed to happen. For that matter, I don't think you'd even see a district third grade side in Sydney forfeit for this reason (I have just finished playing all afternoon in mid 30s myself).

Detractors of Associate cricket are going to have a field day.

Not happy Jan!

Re: Mombasa Tri-Series Match 3: Kenya v Canada

Well apparently it was not heat exhaustion/sun stroke as first reported, but food poisoning (or so it now seems). According to Cricket Europe, the Canadians are not the only ones affected - the Scots have also been suffering, and Cricinfo says that some of the Kenyan team were ill as well.

That renders earlier rant invalid and my full, unreserved and humble apologies to the Canadians.
