Most influencial player in world cricket

Who do you think makes the biggest difference in world cricket? I mean the guy that when he's not playing the rest of the team struggles badly? Personally i cant think of one but who do you think it is.

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

I suppose you could say a certain Mr. Flintoff (when on top form). Maybe not to the point that the rest of the teams struggles, but he certainly adds sometime to the England team.

I'd also be tempted to say Warne for Australia. Again, not so much that others struggle but I think over the years Australia would have drawn a lot more games than they did, his influence over both his own team and opposition made a difference.

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

Vaughan, Flintoff and Pietersen. You can argue me down, but i only really know England so well as to say the three.

Vaughans captaincy is missed so much when he is injured, i'm just glad we have him for Sri Lanka.

Flintoff not in our middle order messes up both batting and bowling.

Pietersen, any team would.

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

I'm thinking it has to be a bowler and probably an opening bowler as they are there to make a massive difference.

Still cant think of one though ::).

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

You could argue the Sri Lankan captain Jaya.... I'm not even going to attempt to spell his name!

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

To a point but in terms of batting I'd say Sangakarra is more of an influence.

Jayawardene is the man your scared of spelling ;). (I bet I spelt it wrong lol)

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

Chanderpaul for the West Indies! Surely hes the one. Without him i dont know why they bother to turn up.

Re: Most influencial player in world cricket

warne for us, murali for sri lanka, lara for west inidies are the influential players that won their countries matches single handedly at times.

Sachin tendulkar in the 90's was the only player whom the team depended.

I don't know if I would have called him influential in the way that Timedout is looking for. Did his absence dramatically change the team, to the to the point where all the other players underperformed or so that the team was a shadow of the team with him included.

Tendulkar is a very fine player but I don't he was forceful enough nor dominant enough to have the same sort of impact on the Indian fortunes as some the others mentioned above have on their teams.

Before the rise of Ganguly(in ODIs) and Dravid(in Tests), Tendulkar was the only star batsman for India except Azharuddin to some extent. India would pretty much lose if he got out for a low score or if he wasn't playing. Though people often question Tendulkar's match winning abilities he holds the record for most Man of the Match awards in ODI Cricket- 57. I think there is little doubt that he is indeed an influential player for India.

Going back to Kihack's Kallis comment. I agree to some extent but in ODI's and T20 games, he obviously doesnt seem to be sured a place.

I think Kallis is an amazing player, and without him SA aren't the same team.

Jaya...

Sur (that's phonetic), I (not an 'e' but the sound of 'i' is similar-ish), Ya (phonetic again).

Jayasuriya :)

I'm a bit surprised that no-one has mentioned Bond. New Zealand aren't great with him but absolute rubbish without him.

I wouldn't go that far, there still a good one day side but a hopeless test match side.
