New Calypsonians CC

New Calypsonians CC

Playing cricket in the Middlesex Champsionship 3rd Division.

Our team is looking for a couple of young athletic players to boost the ranks of the first team. We are finishing mid-table this year but not before coming close to second position. We are already getting 2 new players for next season, and will look to add another one or two and we will probably win the league. So if you want to join a team on the way up:drop us an email.

The team is lively with lots of chat/banter and characters. It is multicultural with Carribeans, Indians, South Africans, Kenyans, Pakistani, Australians and last but not least British (of which most of our members are proud to call themselves.)

Star player is Oliver "Bird" Selwyn. A big man with an even bigger hit. The nickname refers to his size (as in Big Bird off Sesame Street) and the fact that he talks alot (as in chirping like a bird.)
He has some pretty clever and fast leg break bowling that takes regular wickets to back up his top order batting. Tried for Middlesex as a junior.
Sadly this season has seen him start work as a bus driver so he can't always get the Saturday shift swopped to play.

New challenger for his title this year has been Peter Newell. Batting number 3 and second change bowler. Sadly hasnt quite lived up to initial innings of 78 runs and 5 wickets, mainly due to sustaining severe tennis elbow.

Top result this season was the annual Sunday fixture against Little Hampton on their home ground. Alwasy worth the coach trip for this excellent batting track. Their Indian professional scored 277 to put the opposition on 347 off their 40 overs.
We followed with Fifties from Oliver Selwyn,Vincent Farley, Fabian Farley and an unbeaten Century from Matthew Peet, we made the target with 3 balls to spare.

Thanks for the post and hopefully we'll be able to get a player or two for you!

Having just re-read that I was half hoping that he was yellow and bird shaped.

Re: New Calypsonians CC

Just like to add a new memorable moment: stuffing the top of the league team: West Harrow.
Undefeated until last saturday, to be fair they were missing their main strike bowler as overseas pro, left arm round, big in-swingers.
Instead they had a tall ex-Sri lankan u19, buit now he is 22 or so.
The pitch was flat but with odd bounce: some would keep low. If you put you back into it it would certainly bounce though, as teh Sri-lankan promptly started putting 3 out of 6 balls around our ears.
Scotty out early, then Bird went in but he too got put off by the bouncers, before gettting boled with one that seamed away to off stick.
Matt went in and steadied it out for 10 overs. Scoring 20 and another 4 leg byes off his head (no helmet): out caught after charging the quickie and not getting it over long off.
Then Pete joined Patel( who had opened). He started shakily but Patel started hitting singles. The opposition were alraedy frustrated and the quickie had got tired. As soon as he came off Pete started carting it aways for 4's and 6's. To be fair he should have been caught a couple of times on the boundary but if you hit it hard enough you make your own luck.
Pete was out caught on 94, with the score then on 150 after 30 overs. But we had great depth in the batting and everyone else went it and pushed the score to 255 off the 55 overs. Excellent score as we fended off teh occasional low bounce.
Our plan was then to stick it on the stumps and let the bounce do the work for us. And that is what happened. After an initila 10 off the first over, Pete got stuck in and took 3 wickets (mised the hattrick by 1 ball): all with off stick.
Then another 3 wickets in one over. That was it. All out for 58 off 11 overs.
Pete Man of the match with figure of 7 wickets for 5 overs for 20 runs( the number 11 got 2 fours before getting out)
What a result: we should be on to win the league next season.
