New Zealand in Bangladesh

As well as Australia's tour of India, New Zealand start their tour of Bangladesh with the first ODI set to get underway on Thursday. The series is only a short one, going for less than a month and comprises three one-day games and two test matches.

This will be Bangladesh's first hit out since the mass exodus of senior players to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) last month and is sure to test their country's depth which has proven to be quite thin at certain times.

New Zealand captain, Daniel Vettori said earlier in the week that his side expects nothing less than victory. "I think most countries who come to Bangladesh know they are in for a difficult time. Their record may not be great but they have [Mashrafe], Mortaza, Shahadat [Hossain] and Abdur Razzak and it is a nice bowling line-up in their own conditions. They are going to be a formidable opposition for us. We expect to win the series but we also know that it is going to be a tough challenge."

Bangladesh have included three new players into their squad with Imrul Kayes, Naeem Islam, and Mahbubul Alam all coming into the side fresh out the academy. Alam was particularly impressive, taking 16 wickets at an average of 21.12 in a recent tour of Sri Lanka. Alam also claimed 39 wickets at 20.69 in the 2007/2008 National Cricket League, Bangladesh's domestic competition.

New Zealand's last major hitout was the England tour in June so they come into the series without having played much cricket in recent times. However, their one-day squad possesses a lot of talent with youngster Tim Southee once again claiming a spot and relative newcomers Daniel Flynn and Jesse Ryder also securing berths. Southee and Ryder are also a part of the test squad with Iain O'Brien, Jamie How and Aaron Redmond set to join them after the one-dayers are finished.

So, this is shaping up to be a series of the unknown. New Zealand will start out hot favourites in both forms but the Tigers have a few cards up their sleeve and they also have home ground advantage so there's no telling what will happen.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Game on in Dhaka, New Zealand were sent into bat by Bangladesh and the move worked wonders. The Kiwis started well thanks to Jesse Ryder and McCullum but the fall of McCullum undid New Zealand as they lost a further 5/32 to slip to 6/79. However, Jacob Oram remained at the crease and built a 70 run partnership with Daniel Vettori who made 30 before falling to Shakib al Hasan. Oram soldiered on and scored 58 before falling whilst trying to increase the run rate, Kyle Mills fell much the same way, caught in the deep but no before he found the boundary twice with a four and a six. Tim Southee also teed off at the end helping NZ to 9/201 from their 50 overs.

Bangladesh bowled very, very well, particularly Mashrafe Mortaza who started the rot, taking the first two wickets and then the wicket of Jamie How to have three in his first spell. He then came back at the end and took his fourth wicket, that of Mills to finish with fine figures of 4/44. Abdur Razzak also bowled well, suffocatin NZ's middle order as they struggled for runs. Razzak had figures of 3/33 from ten overs, proving his worth to the Bangladeshi side.

So, the chase looks to be a beauty, could we see an epic upset here or will NZ fight back with the ball? We'll find out shortly.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Bangladesh comfortably in front at the moment. They're 2/125 in the 33rd over, needing only another 77 runs from 17.1 overs. Something drastic would have to wrong for the Tigers to lose from here.

Tamim Iqbal was the first to fall pretty early, he was out for 12 in the 5th over to Kyle Mills. The only other wicket to fall was that of keeper Mushfiqur Rahim who scored 30 before succumbing to Scott Styris. Junaid Siddique has batted slowly but very maturely and has accumulated 60 runs at this point, Mohammad Ashraful is up to 19.

Looking good for Bangladesh, they should be able to win from here without too much trouble.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Not only did Bangladesh win, they won comprehensively. Shocking to say the least.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Vettori was talking Bangladesh up in the last few days - which should make the press conferences this evening a bit easier :) - he can say "I told you so". Doubt he'll enjoy it much though.

Great win for them - was it Bangladesh that were recently decimated by the ICL bannings?

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Yeah, given that they lost quite a few talented players like Aftab Ahmed, Alok Kapali, Shahriar Nafees its rather surprising that they defeated NZ who are pretty good in ODI's.
We've seen Bangladesh win before against the likes of Australia, India and Pakistan but they haven't been able to repeat that consistently. Hopefully they'll be competitive in this series.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Game Two is underway, Bangladesh won the toss and chose the bowl first.

Bangladesh XI: Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Siddique, +Mushfiqur Rahim, *Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hasan, Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Shahadat Hossain, Syed Rasel, Mahmudullah

New Zealand XI: Jesse Ryder, +Brendon McCullum, Jamie How, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris, Daniel Flynn, Jacob Oram, *Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel

Bangladesh doing well again, NZ are 2/44 in the 13th over. McCullum was the first to go for 12, but that included a four and a six. Jamie How was the second wicket to fall, only a short time ago too. He made a duck from 16 balls. Jesse Ryder has done the bulk of the scoring, with 30 not out with Ross Taylor the new man in on zero.

Syed Rasel has done the damage with the ball, removing both McCullum and How. He has 2/22 so far.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand falling apart again. Ryder hit a return catch to Rasel about two minutes after my post above, he was gone for 30 and then Styris was out for a duck in the very next over to Mashrafe Mortaza.

Taylor and Daniel Flynn have started the recovery mission and NZ have recovered slightly to 4/67 after Styris fell at 45. Rasel finishes with 3/23 from his ten overs, his spell included four maidens.

Another job for the Kiwi middle order, Flynn and taylor must score well here as well as Oram who's the next man in. Bangladesh on top again so far.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Another ordinary effort from New Zealand, Flynn made 25 and Taylor 33 as they slumped to 6/112 with Vettori departing on 115 after scoring only one run. Once again, it was Jacob Oram who rescued New Zealand with a fine half century before some supreme hitting at the end of Abdur Razzak's final over (which happened to be the final over of the innings) saw NZ climb to 9/212, eleven runs higher than their score in game one. Oram smashed 25 off the final over, which included three sixes and a four to finish on 75 not out from only 62 balls.

Bangladesh bowled beautifully again, Syed Rasel did the damage early on and then Shakib al Hasan stunted the middle order's momentum with 2/20 from ten overs, a great effort. Naeem Islam also picked up 2/20 from four overs. The usually tight Abdur Razzak went for 67 runs from nine overs and went wicketless to boot.

So, another great performance from the Tigers, can they make it two in a row and win the series? It would be quite an achievement if they did.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Great news for the Tigers. I have this great feeling that they will be a very strong team in 10 years time. A large population to pull from, a good setup over there and some good experience coaches helping them out will only see the Bangledishy's rise in the world ranks.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Tamim Iqbal gone for a duck from the second ball of the innings. Slow going for the Bangladeshis so far, 1/15 from seven overs. Mushfiqur Rahim up to 11.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Bangladesh were disapponting in reply, bowled out for a very ordinary 137 from 42.2 overs. Mushfiqur Rahim was out for 11 as the Tigers slipped to 2/18 in reply. However, Junaid Suddique and captain Mohammad Ashraful formed a useful partnership of 53 before Suddique fell victim to Tim Southee. From there, Bangladesh collapsed, losing wickets at regular intervals, Shakib al Hasan was next to go and then Naeem Islam was run out for a diamond duck the very next ball turning the chase from difficult to almost impossible. Ashraful followed with the score on 110 and the tail proceeded to fold rather quickly even with Mortaza's 27 not out adding some respectibility to a pretty poor and very slow batting performance.

Kyle Mills was super with the ball, taking 3/13 from 6.4 overs, including three maidens. Jacob Oram chimed in with two wickets with Vettori and Southee grabbing one. The other three wickets were run outs.

So, New Zealand too good with the bat after an ordinary batting effort. Bangladesh too were good with the cherry but their batting let them down and they will want to improve on that for the series deciding game three.

Jacob Oram was Man of the Match.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

3rd ODI is pretty close to finishing. New Zealand batted first and scored 7/249 from their 50 overs. Ross Taylor scored a fine century, making 103 in a good return to form. Jamie How made 73 as he and Taylor scored a third wicket stand of 125. Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills chipped in at the end as the Kiwis slogged their way to their total.

Shakib Al Hasan was Bangladesh's best bowler, taking 2/41. Mashrafe Mortaza also bowled well, taking 2/50. The other wickets were all singled to Syed Rasel, Abdur Razzak and Naeem Islam.

In reply, Bangladesh lost Junaid Suddique early for one and it's been all downhill from there. The Tigers lost consistent wickets, debutant Imral Kayes could make just 12. The dismissal of Mohammad Ashraful, the Bangladesh summed up their innings. Ashraful went for a massive heave across the line off Jacob Oram only for the ball to crash into the stumps.

The Tigers slipped to 7/98 but Razzak and Islam have added some respectibility to the scoreboard. Razzak was just out for 27 with the score now at 8/150 with three overs to go.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

A subdued finish to the game, with the game well out of reach there wasn't much to play for, NZ's part-timers got in a few overs with the Bangladesh lower order getting some batting practice.

They finished at 8/170, well short of NZ's 7/249. Naeem Islam top scored with 46 not out but it came from 106 balls, far too slow to pressure NZ's total.

For the Kiwis, Jeetan Patel, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills all picked up two scalps with Tim Southee and Jess Ryder the other two.

Easy win to New Zealand, they win the game and the series 2-1. The Tigers had their chanes in this series but they couldn't put it togther to muster up a win.

Anyway, we're onto the tests now. The first test begins on Friday 17th at Chittagong.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

is anyone watching this live?

Can you tell me who the broadcast is? And the commentary team?

ta.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. So far, they have crawled to 4/138 from 81 overs. The Tigers started incredibly slowing and were 1/34 at lunch, having faced 32 overs. They soon slipped to 4/44 as NZ's bowlers increased the tempo and the Bangladesh top order just coulnd't handle it.

However Mehrab Hossain Jnr has fought hard and is 62 not out with keeper Mushfiqur Rahim on 31. Iain O'Brien and Daniel Vettori have two wickets each so far. O'Brien has the amazing figures of 11-8-4-2, quite remarkable. Vettori has 2/46 from 26 overs bowled.

Bangladesh XI: Tamim Iqbal, Junaid Suddique, Rajin Saleh, *Mohammad Ashraful, Mehrab Hossain Jnr, +Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shahadat Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Shakib al Hasan

New Zealand XI: Aaron Redmond, Jamie How, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, +Brendon McCullum, Daniel Flynn, Jacob Oram, *Daniel Vettori, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jeetan Patel

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

Bangladesh made it to 4/183 at stumps, Mehrab is not out on 79 and Mushfiqur Rahim got a half century and is 59 not out.

Good fightback from Bangladesh after a very slow start. They'll be looking to consolidate tomorrow.

Re: New Zealand in Bangladesh

New Zealand ran through Bangladesh this morning, picking up the last six wickets for only 62 runs. Mehrab Hossain Jnr fell almost immediately in the morning session for a well made 83 and Mushfiqur Rahim also batted well for his 79. Other than those two, the middle and lower order failed to put up much of a fight and the Tigers were all out for 245.

Daniel Vettori did the damage with 5/59 from 36 overs. Iain O'Brien added another wicket today to finish with three for the innings with Jeetan Patel taking the other two.

A good session for the Kiwis, you would say they are in front but their batting has been poor of late, in both forms of the game. Their batting line-up is young so it will be interesting to say how they go against this Bangladesh attack.
