New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Sri Lanka didn't bat for long in the first test.

They're batting first again in the second test, but things are going a little better for them this time.

For one thing, Silva isn't out for a duck this time. He's already up to 23.
Even better for Sri Lanka is that Sangakkara is up to 81.

Sri Lanka 125-4 after 31 overs.
The second session is just getting uderway.

For New Zealand, Martin took 3 early wickets, leaving Sri Lanka at 41-3, but thanks to Sangakkara, Sri Lanka has recovered from that.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Sangakkara got his century, and Silva got his half-century.
This partnership makes it look like this test will last a little longer than the first one.

Sri Lanka 193-4 after 42
(Sangakkara 113*, Silva 59*)

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Silva finally out for 61, but he'll be far more pleased with this test than he was with the last one.

Sri Lanka 202-5 after 45

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

The rest of the team is crumbling around him, so Sangakkara is trying to hit as many boundaries as he can.

Sri Lanka is 267-9, with Sangakkara accounting for 155 all by himself.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

scratch that, Murali out for a duck, Sri Lanka all out for 268

Sangakkara unbeaten on 156.

so the 268 breaks down like this:

Sangakkara..................................156
Silva...........................................61
extras.........................................10
the other 9 SL batsmen combined.....41

Pitiful showing from most of the team. Prasana Jayawardene was the only other batsman in double figures. A full FIVE players were out for ducks.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

New Zealand struggled to 4/66 at stumps on Day 1. A maginificent century from Sangakkara kept Sri Lanka in the hunt with great support from Silva.

But Malinga starred with the ball for the Lankans, taking 3/37 including the wicket of Astle which happened to be the last ball of the day. How was out earlier for 26 and of course Astle for 17.

Even game at the moment, Sri Lankans just in front I'd say.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Kumar is the man!!! He has been fantastic, but unfortunately rest of his team wasn't in the 1st test.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

NZ all bundled up for 130!!!!

Malinga with 5 and Murali 4.

Looks like it's going to be a battle between Kumar and Malinga to determine who wins the Man of the Match award. (Or could Murali stake his claim later on?) Sri Lanka should do nothing other than win this test match and level series now.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Wow, 130 is an absolutely pitiful total.

That's going to be nearly impossible for New Zealand to bounce back from.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

The incredibly refreshing thing about this is, this is only a 2 test match series. If Sri Lanka level it in New Zealand after their disaster in 1st test, it will be a great achievement for them. Especially after the first test, with a makeup of very young team they've got, they were pretty much written off for a whitewash. Silva had 2 ducks in the 1st test on debut, but they stuck with him and he probably helped out with match-winning performance with Kumar in 1st inning. What they've achieved in less than 2 days so far is very refreshing.

Something like this is what Indian team in South Africa can take heart from, about positive attitude and not giving up with youngsters. (Of course, India don't have a freaky weapon like Malinga in their armor, but still.)

The only bad thing about this series has been the crowds, or rather the complete lack of them. It's almost as if both matches were being played in completely empty stadiums, a stark contrast when compared with the Ashes. The only emotions, cheering, sorrow you can see is on players' faces. (Except Shane Bond, whose mother doesn't seem to have taught him how to smile when he was a kid. Even when he takes good wickets, he's expressionless.) Otherwise, they're pretty much playing in ghost towns.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Sri Lanka 225-5 at stumps, thats a lead of 363.

They could probably declare early tomorrow and win safely if they wanted to, but what's the point. There's still 3 days left in the test, so they might as well use all 5 of their remaining wickets and build as big of a total as possible. Well, of course, they could probably safely declare right now, the way batting has been in this series, but since there's no rush at all, why bother?

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Sri Lanka finish 365 all out, Vettori gets 7 wickets, Silva finishes not out on 152.
Great innings for both of them, especially Silva, with a vastly superior test compared to his debut ducks.

Sri Lanka have a lead of 503 runs. Now New Zealand can start going about the simple task of scoring 504 runs over the next 2 and a half days.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

New Zealand finish the day 75-2,
they still trail by 429 runs

Losing those 2 wickets didn't help their chances in the least. They're still heavy favorites to lose this test.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Dominant session for Sri Lanka, taking 5 wickets.

New Zealand is 174-7 at lunch, and they still trail by over 300 runs.
Its just a matter of time now.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 2nd Test

Sri Lanka came back strongly in this series and earned a 217-run win to tie the series with the Blackcaps at 1-1. Murali took 6 for 87 (10 overall in this match) as New Zealand folded for 286. Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Vettori engaged in battle of world-class spin, both claiming 10 wickets each, but it was the Sri Lankan who ended on the winning side.
Muralitharan employed his stock off-break and doosra to devastating effect and sawed through New Zealand's middle and lower order to claim the 57th five-wicket haul in his test career (9th in this year) and to lift his career total to 674 wickets from 110 tests.
96-run eighth wicket stand between Daniel Vettori and James Frankling briefly delayed the outcome but Murali returned to add a couple of more wickets to his tally. In the end a great effort by the Lankans, winning this match with a huge margin.

PRESENTATION

Chamara Silva (61 and 152*) gets the Man of the Match award in his debut Test.

Mahela Jayawardene: He is proud to win this match and comeback in the series to level it. He thanks Sangakkara, Muralitharan, Chamara Silva and Lasith malinga for their efforts. He looks forward to the T20 series and the ODI series to prepare for the World cup.

Stephen Fleming: He said that Sri Lankans played great cricket. Over the past year they have emerged as a credible and strong Test team. He admitted that they played a low scoring match and couldn't carry the momentum of the first Test. He is now looking forward to the 2-match T20 series and the ODI series but wants to prepare for the orthodox nature of Sri Lankan attack which can pose problem for them. Finally he thanks Mahela for his sportsmanship in the series, it has been tested at time but he came good.

National Bank Test match Trophy is shared between the two
