Re: New Zealands tour of England

First Test is underway. England won the toss and decided to bowl first. So far it's paid dividends for them and they have New Zealand in a bit of trouble at 5/141. Aaron Redmond's test debut didn't go to plan, he was out for a duck with Daniel Flynn, also on debut not faring much better, he was bowled for nine. Both debutants were out to James Anderson, who is the pick of the bowlers with 3/42. Stuart Broad has 2/40 from 10 overs.

Good start for England, Brendon McCullum is the dangerman though, he has 50 not out and fellow big hitter Jacob Oram is at the crease too on 13. England need to be careful as these two could swing the game away from them.

England XI: Andrew Strauss, Alistair Cook, *Michael Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood, +Tim Ambrose, Stuart Broad, Ryan Sidebottom, Monty Panesar, James Anderson

New Zealand XI: Jamie How, James Redmond, James Marshall, Ross Taylor, +Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee, Kyle Mills, Chris Martin

Re: New Zealands tour of England

McCullum made 97 before being bowled by Panasar. He only faced 97 balls, 20-20 cricket influence?

208/6 with only 52.1 overs being bowled due to bad light. This will be a common occurence this test match as an early May cricket is often stopped due to it being too dark

Re: New Zealands tour of England

New Zealand were bowled out for 277. Oram made it to 28 and Daniel Vettori scored 48 batting in the lower order but the tail didn't add too many runs due to an excellent effort from Ryan Sidebottom, taking all four of New Zealand's remaining wickets, three of which were bowled. Sidebottom finish with figures of 4/55 from 28.2 overs.

In reply, England are 0/26. Some light rain is falling and coupled with the poor light once again, there is no play possible at the moment.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Off for bad light again. That was a productive session for England though, 42 runs is less than ten overs.

They're 0/68, Cook has done the bulk of the scoring with 43.

They've really got to start these games earlier, 11am is too late a start at this time of the year in England. They should be looking to start at 10am to avoid losing so many overs. 52.1 overs were bowled yesterday and now only 42.1 overs today, they've almost lost a whole day's play and this is only day two!!!

Re: New Zealands tour of England

I know its ridiculous only seeing just over 90 overs for the whole first two days. I remembered when the West Indies travelled there last year and it was the same story. It must be freezing, no shorts sleaves and hands in pockets the whole game. Use some common sense

Re: New Zealands tour of England

0/89, Cook has 53 not out. Play has been stopped for five hours now due to rain. Not much can be done about the rain.

Going back to what I said before, they really need to start play at 10am, losing almost a day's play inside the first two days is ludicrous. This game is looking a like a draw alrwady and we haven't even finished the third day yet. I'm sure England will be disappointed with the poor light the game has encountered so far.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Play has been abandoned for the rest of day three with no change to the score. Play will restart at 11am local time tomorrow.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

England lose three wickets in the first session, Cook for 61, Strauss for 63 and Pietersen for just three.

3/160 on the verge of lunch, Michael Vaughan and Ian Bell at the crease on 12 and 6 respectively.

Daniel Vettori, Jacob Oram and Chris Martin are the wicket getters.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Ian Bell out for 16 not too long ago,

4/195, Michael Vaughan up to 31. Still trail by 82 runs.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Paul Collingwood didn't last long, he fell to Vettori for six and then the very next ball, Vettori traps Tim Ambros in front for a first ball duck!!

He didn't get the hat-trick though and England are 6/233, Michael Vaughan has toiled hard for 56 so far. England still trailing by 44.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Wonder if Atherton will be chatting with Vettori after the close of play today?

NZ bowlers finally making a mark

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Vaughan hit a tremendous ton. Other then Cook and Strauss all other players really seemed to struggle out there.

NZ in reply 40/0

Oh and welcome to the site usalion @| :)

Re: New Zealands tour of England

NZ are 115/4 with How just out on 68

Could be tough going to post a sizeable lead but McCullum is there, Oram still to bat and Vettori isn't too shabby with the bat. Will be very much an uphill battle

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Welcome to the site usalion. Good to have another quality poster on board, hope to see you on here frequently. @|

McCullum retires hurt on 11, Stu Broad hit him just below the elbow and the pain was too intense for him to continue. Jacob Oram at the crease now and he is 13 not out, Daniel Flynn is on 8.

4/146, a lead of 104.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

And the game is drawn, bad light stops play with New Zealand on 6/269, Flynn and Vettori the not out batters on 29 and 0 respectively.

Jacob Oram made a fine century, scoring 101 and took his team away from the clutches of England's bowlers, who at one stage were threatening to run through the Kiwi batting order. When Oram was dismissed, Brendon McCullum returned and scored 24 and was out only a few mins before the umpires took out the light meter and ended the game.

New Zealand lead by 227 runs at the close and who knows what would have happened had this game not fallen victim to rain, wind and some poor light. Had we had five full days of play, we could have seen a cracking finish but we won't find that out now.

Ryan Sidebottom and James Anderson finished with two wickets to lead the wicket-getters list.

So a tame draw to end the first test, not what we were after but I suppose things can only get better from here provided the English weather doesn't ruin what looks to be an even series.

The second test of the three test series starts on Thursday at Old Trafford.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

bloody english rain ruins it, i would like to see a reserve day in test matches to try and stop these rain effected draws happening

But whoi is to say a reserve day would solve it- you could get more rain...it is England after all....and the schedules ar already crazy enough. Nice idea, but it would be very difficult to work in....

Solid batting from Oram in the second dig.

Thanks for the welcome, guys...I'll be posting on here fairly frequently.

i know that a reserve day may not work but i think it would more times than not. Also for the fans that went on a day affected alot by rain they could maybe get into the 6th day for free. I guess if they do this though we'll be asking for 7th days etc.... :p

For me I am all for reserve days but only if more then 2/3 of a day or days play at once for bad weather and poor light. But saying that if the ECB got their brains around the fact that they will always struggle to finish a test match as close to 5 days with full 90 overs per day due to it being May and it becomes incredibly dark quickly, then a rest day will not be needed.
