Ranji Trophy Super League

This thread is for discussion of the Ranji Trophy Super League, India's largest FC competition.

For the first game, here are the performers in a quick list. It is day two so many of the batsmen are still not out. I'll try to do one of these each match for ease of viewing.

Batsmen

Manoj Tiwary: 147*
Cheteswar Pujara: 64
Sahil Kukreja: 66
Prashant Naik: 76*
Shiv Sunder Das: 75
Suresh Raina: 187*

Bowlers:

Pankaj Singh: 5/43 off 15
Ramesh Powar: 5/69 off 29
Ajit Agarkar: 2/25 off 15.5
Sudeep Tyagi: 6/46 off 16.5 on debut
Gagandeep Singh: 4/53 off 25.4

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

Agarkar, Tyagi and G.Singh all seemed to have done well!

The batsmen, especially Raina, seemed to have had a good game, and he's still not out! Big score maybe?

I've not heard too much about the Ranji Trophy, but ill be keeping tabs on it with your help Manee!

Ye, I'll keep you updated but it will be solely from cricinfo.

These are all from different games in case there was some confusion.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

Manee - great idea for a thread.

Sudeep Tyagi seems to have had a stunning debut, if he can keep that up, then who knows!

Also, Raina must have been going some, 203 of 217 is immense.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

Yes, I guess Wisden were right to put Raina in one of their 10 cricketers to define cricket in the next decade. He has scored nothing but quick 40s, 50s and this 100 since his comeback. FC average of 48, List A strike rate of over 80, he is certainly very talented.

Gagandeep Singh needs to get a test debut before it is too late. He has one of the best FC records in the game with 230 wickets at 20.14. The reason for his non selection is lack of international pace but I think that if he is over 120kph (having never seen him bowl, I am not sure if he is or not), he should be in the test squad for Pakistan along with Bose who impressed for Indians against Sri Lanka A over in England in the summer with a Michelle. India's strength clearly lies in RMF bowlers and they should not be in denial about that. As far as pace goes, I draw the line at Joginder Sharma who barely pushes 120kph and is bullied at international level but even him I felt was right to be given opportunities.

manee, you from cricketvoice?

Raina seems like a great talent... he should be picked to play tests ahead of Yuvraj, Kaif and few other jokers.

Raina and Tiwary are going to be better than Dravid and Laxman in test matches and may be even better than Tendulkar.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

The only thing I'd say about Raina is that he is young (20 years old?), maybe a year around the one day squad will do him better than being pushed straight into the test team.

He could be great talent, a mainstay of the team for the next 10/15 years, i he's handled correctly.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

One thing I want to know - how would you rate the standard of cricket in the Ranji trophy? Better than the English county game, same or worse?

Slightly worse. The plate league however, is miles worse than the English Division 2.

Here is an update of who (only people who may be pushing for selection or are international players) has been doing what as of late:

  • Dravid has hit yet another hundred (121) for Karnataka.
  • Kumble took 3 for 55 whilst captaining Karnataka.
  • Yusuf Pathan has entered an esteemed list of taking five wickets and scoring a century in consecutive innings.
  • Ishant Sharma took 4 for 72 for Delhi
  • Aakash Chopra is 53* for that same team.
  • Munaf Patel, after the recently concluded Rajasthan second innings, has match figures of 6 for 130.
  • Rival Pankaj Singh took 4 for 83 in the Maharashtra first innings.
  • Indian opener Dinesh Karthik hit 76 off 108 in Tamil Nadu's first innings.
  • With four wickets left in the Tamil Nadu innings, Mumbai spinner Ramesh Powar has match figures of 7 for 112*.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

Cheers for the update manee, seems like a fair few of the Indian team are trying to get their names out their for selection.

Dravid is in superb form currently.

What do you think about Pativ Patel? His batting seems to be coming along nicely and he's still only 22. Will he ever get back in the team?

Until there is a crisis in Indian cricket, he sadly will not get a look in. His keeping has not improved that much (he struggled to keep against Amit Mishra's leg spin) and although his batting has come along leaps and bounds (6 or 7 centuries this year already for India A and Rest of India), he won't be taken seriously playing in the Plate League (the level of Premier Division club cricket in England except with just 16 teams and the teams being paid much much more).

Just for an indication of the level of the Plate League, Joginder Sharma averages under 20 with the ball there!

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

I never really knew that about the plate trophy, seems a bit strange to me.

Are the games in that competition considered first class?

They are considered First Class in terms of statistics. Many players in the Plate League are considered for the India A team but only considered for the India team in a time of injury crisis or a player who is considered a special talent. I'll give you the tip to not take the FC statistics of anyone in the Plate League seriously.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

If that is the case then you have to wonder why they bother giving it first class status. Seems a bit of a joke to be honest.

I was just thinking the same thing.

Re: Ranji Trophy Super League

the plate is rubbish, pakistan has better 1st class system - look at the quality we produce

players like younus, yousef, inzi and asif, big talents

It is a joke, but certainly a tough issue to deal with the several dozen regions in India. Clumping them together randomly would just not work since it would alienate local supporters.

@Pak God, Pakistan's system is just as bad. Any production of talent is testomant to the oodles of talent in Pakistan.
