Rhythm

I'm 16 years old, 6'2 and still growing. I'm bowling quick for my age but I have really been struggling with my run up and action in games (in other words my rhythm). It feels like every run up and action is different and generally doesn't feel right which has meant I have been front foot no balling and bowling wides.

I know I am a rhythm bowler and when everything clicks I bowl well. Whats the best action to take to get my rhythm back, is it a case of just hoping it clicks or should I seek help from a coach?

I would love to hear what other people think and if anyone has experienced what I am currently?

Thanks

Tom

Re: Rhythm

Hi Tom and welcome to the board.

I think that at some time or the other every bowler experiences what you are currently. It can be due to a few things, from not enough cricket to having out grown your existing run-up.

To find a suitable run-up, start at the popping crease and then run away from it. When you feel as though you should bowl, stop and mark it. This will give you something to start from, although you may have to adjust it slightly.

Get someone to spot where your front foot is landing to help cut out those no-balls - move the start of your run-up back by a fraction more than you're overstepping. Once you have something that you're happy with, stick with it and make sure you always mark it out properly before a spell. The aim of pace bowling is to repeat the action as closely as possible, time after time after time.

As far as the 'changing' action goes, then it's hard to say. I'd wager that your bowling action is pretty consistent, it just feels that it's different. If you could possibly post up a video then we may be able to help out a bit more.

Re: Rhythm

Hi Tom.

Rhythm is really important and I agree with mas, I think you have just outgrown your run up and his advice is excellent.

Are you a sprinter by any chance?

Re: Rhythm

No i'm not a sprinter by any means, I find that cruising in and getting everything in the right place is my aim and my pace tends to come from arm speed and wrist action as well as my hight.

I will post a video of my action as soon as the weather brightens up and I can get to nets.

Thanks for the replys is really useful

Re: Rhythm

i do this alot...its usually when i've netted alot and get tired ..then my action tends to go sloppy and it starts 2 not gel well at all and then i start thinking why its not working and start making changes and all my rhythem goes. When this happens i tend to a) remark my run-up, slow my action down and get all working again or B) have a rest and then get my coach to analyse me action to see weres going lazy and correcting it

Re: Rhythm

It happens to a lot of people, they get tired and then they tend to fall away in the action, causing the ball to get pushed down leg.

Re: Rhythm

its hard for me to ever get in a decent rhythm while bowling. would the load up have anything to do with it? i want to get my load up to around my chin instead of behind my head...would this help in terms of rhythm?

thanks guys.

Re: Rhythm

Perhaps not rhythm, but it would likely help with pace and accuracy*.

*Assuming that you can turn the new load up into a natural motion in your action rather than it having to be forced everytime.
