ricky ponting

ricky ponting??
what do u guys think of him
good or bad??
is he the right captain for australia??
do u think hes the best batsmen in the world?
some may disagree even though he was given the title best current batsmen in the world
what are your thoughts??

Re: ricky ponting

Good man, who got a bad rep from that test. i reackon generally he is a good man, congratulates opposition and whatnot, but i think he got caught up in all of this hype and suffice to say he didnt handle it very well.

He is without a doubt the best captain this counrty has seen and well deserves to keep the captaincy till he decides to relinquish it. What Peter Roebuck said is complete trash, and he doesnt know what he is talking about, and i dont think i could trust much of what he says anymore

As for the best batsmen, right at this current moment, no. He needs to be more consistent, he hasnt hit a century in a while. Back during the Ashes, i would have said yes, but now, im not to sure

Re: ricky ponting

If you are talking of the 21st century, he has been the best batsman until now. 2007 wasn't the best year for Ponting, but Australia didn't play too many tests in 2007 either. Sangakkara is on the top of the rankings currently, but I'd rate Kallis ahead of him. As far as captaincy goes, I haven't seen much of his captaincy to comment on it.

Re: ricky ponting

Good point on the not many tests issue, I think they only played something like 4 or 5, way to few. But you just need to look at the stats, 16 tests on the trot, and most of them werent won in controversial fashion

Re: ricky ponting

I have to say ricky ponting is a complete arse. Talented but an arse.

Re: ricky ponting

I cant say i agree. Sure hes copped a bit of flak but i reackon deep down he truely is a good bloke

Re: ricky ponting

I don't think he's a great captain. He inherited a great team, much like Waugh before him (although Waugh added something to it).

The only thing Ponting has added is the sense that Australia are the moral bearers of the game, yet cheat as much if not more than the rest.

As a batsman he has few peers, as a person many.

Re: ricky ponting

I think it is a terrible thing to call him a cheater, that is a blatant attack on his character. And even with a great team, nothing will run smoothly and games won't be won if the captain isn't up to scratch and willing to take gambles to win a match, much like what Waugh did.

Re: ricky ponting

He is a cheat.

Did you see him claim a catch in the second innings of the second test against India, he clearly grounded the ball something he does all to often.

Re: ricky ponting

Maybe he grounded it, but that mightn't have been obvious to him, it was only slightly, but heaps of people claim grounded catches, simply because they cant be sure themselves. You should remember when Dhoni claimed a catch off Kevin Pieterson when he clearly, following replays, grounded it. So those sorts of catches aren't unheard of in cricket, but if you don't like him its not my job to change your mind

Re: ricky ponting

its understandable that he might have thought he caught it. but what annoys me is that he still maintains that he caught it. numerous replays were shown and the ball was indeed grassed. he should have realised it by now. i know it happened with dhoni once but i dont see him threatning journalists when asked about it.
its hard to say if hes a good captain because he has a pretty strong team. his captaincy skills dont get tested much.
batting wise he has been phenomenal in the past 6-7 years and should be on the all time best list.

Re: ricky ponting

I was talking about the catch ponting took when the ball looped over his head. Ponting took the catch then had his hand on top of the ball which was on the ground, he still claimed the catch. If you watch ponting in slips he often uses his catching hand for balance often grounding the ball. He is a cheat and if that is what Australia want as an ambassador then you can keep him.

Re: ricky ponting

OK, well just win more Tests.

And just for the record i read somewhere that he isnt such a bad ambassador. Before the Sydney Test, for obvious reasons, when it was made known that you were Australian then a lot of people would ask you if you knew Ricky Ponting, no-one else, but Ricky. Although after the last test, i highly doubt that thats going to happen for a long time!

And i've never seen him balance himself with his catching hand, and hence grounding the ball

Re: ricky ponting

what did he do wrong in the sydney test besides claim an grounded catch (everyone makes mistakes) get over it!!
why are people ringing his parents house and making threats
well thats what they said on the news??
but whta did he do thats so controversial

you should ask that to the people who did it. it was a pathetic thing to do and they should track the call and have the offender arrested.
the controversy is about him sticking to his claim despite evidence against it and also signalling the wicket of ganguly which wasnt a clean catch.
i know everyone makes mistakes but all this controversy would have been easily avoided if he bothered to apologize about it.

Re: ricky ponting

he shouldnt be sacked over that geez
and yes the people that phoned his parents and pranked them should be traced and shot in the head
what a coward thing to do hide behind the phone and make threats
and what the flip is with the indians burning his jersey??
thats jus bullshivism they look like dills
we beat them there sad about it so they burn pontings jersey lol

Sometimes you know if you've grounded a catch but more often than not, it happens so fast you just haven't got a clue.

Is he a cheat? I can't answer for sure because I can't read his mind. One thing he may be guilty of is playing the game a bit too hard and not quite in the spirit intended but then that can happen in the heat of the battle.

As a batsman he's easily in the top 5 in the world at the moment, and has been for the past few years.

I have heard that this was shown on some news channels and in newspapers. I've never seen any fans reacting in such a way but I guess there must be few illiterate people in the country, who indulge in such activities. Obviously, its the kind of thing that our media loves to highlight but it gives a bad name to the country.
