Several Fast Bowling Questions

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Oh Golly Manee! Do you ever wish you had a rewind button on time sometimes

Problem 1: Pre exercise stretching is extremely important, it is just static stretches that are frowned on. See http://www.harrowdrive.com/how-to-warm-up-for-cricket/

Problem 2: I am a little confused; are you talking about your elbow or above your elbow?

Problem 3: When did the toe nail fall off? Have you noticed any regrowth yet? Are you using antifungal applications?

Problem 2: I am a little confused; are you talking about your elbow or above your elbow? After my hair became loose and my nail fell off in the process (I'm starting to sound like a women), I was just about ready to explode.

Problem 3: When did the toe nail fall off? Have you noticed any regrowth yet? Are you using antifungal applications?

I really wished I did rewind it. You really understand how I felt. When my hair became loose and my finger nail half fell off, it was truly breaking point for me.

Thanks for the warm up guide.

It is in line with the elbow but 'on the other side' so to speak. If the elbow is on the back of the arm, it is the bone, in line on the front.

My toe nail fell off about two years ago. However, it was dangling for so long beforehand that one had grown below it (covered in dried blood). I was fine and it hasn't fallen off since. That reminds me of when it finally fell off, I was walking up the stairs and realised that I'd stepped on something sharp and that my toe was now red. It took me a little while to add 2 and 2 to get 4.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Problem 2: It sounds like the annular ligament, if so, I am afraid it sounds like lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow. Take a look at http://www.tennis-elbow.net/tenniselbow.htm and come back to me if it does not help.

Problem 3: You could pad the shoe where the toe touches it or pad the toe. You may need to go up half a shoe size (recommended). Unfortunately, most people try their cricket shoes on when they are not playing and forget that during practise, training, matchplay etc the feet swell.

The hole completely solves the problem, I was just wondering if there is a biomechanical cause.

It is not tennis elbow, it just occurs for a day or two, not 6-12 months. I think the warm up will solve problems 1 and 2.

Thank you.

Solves the problem of pressure but causes others in protection and stability.

Not sure what you mean by 'biomechanical cause'. For what?

Problem is, there are only three bones in the arm, humerus, radius and ulna. Perhaps you should see your GP.

For the fact that my toe hits the top of my shoe when many other bowlers do not have the problem.

I will see my GP about my arm. It is not too serious though, comes only once a year during winter sessions. Still added to my misery though.

What muscles are needed for a front on action; just for reference, the action I am looking to take things from is Brett Lee.

...Harrowdrive mumbles something about 'movements not muscles' before being ignored by all....

C'mon mate, that was ages ago. You have since enlightened me.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Harrowdrive, I read your warm up guide and actually did a lot of it (except the spints) in my house and I do feel very loose, despite bowling earlier today.

A few of them baffle me though.

Part 2: Holding a cricket bat or medicine ball
- Standing chest press

Part 3. Mobility and flexibility
- Ankle flicks
- Small skips

Then find someone or something to lean on to complete these mobility exercises:
- Leg out
- Leg Forward
- Knee across

The 'bone-like-thing' (which is what I'll call it) has gone down but I still feel a bit of a stretch when I practise bowling gently. Another symptom is that it rises when I tense it, so obviously, tension causes it to come up and hurt. Is it a job for freeze or heat spray?

I am currently using a vibrating massager which has infared light on the other side. Is infared good for recovery of muscles like this?

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

man, i may not have a degree in a whole bunch of stuff but that landing on that right leg looks nasty. i was wincing just looking at it ;)

Could you expand please. Do I hit the ground too hard?

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

It looks like you put a lot of stress on that right leg, im not sure but it looks like all the stress thats built up during the run up is placed on that leg. sorry i cant explain further, but as i said im not up in the know how of biomechanics

You don't need to be, what you just posted has been helpful.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

yea your fitness (NO OFFENSE) is an issue, even though your technique is good you still could have more pace and rhythm. On the video it looks like your working too hard.

Do water sprints, length, long running and lots of stretching
thats what you would need to work on i have to say

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

From those videos it looks like you hop before the bowling crease? Or is it just a high step? You shouldn't hope into your delivery stride, I had that problem in u12s.

BTW I could post a video of m bowling if I can find the cords to transfer it onto the computer.

This is the end of a two hour net session though. I can get through five to six overs with no severe difficulty.

What do you mean by 'hop'. Do you believe my back leg should come further in front of my front leg during the jump?

What level of cricketer are you? No reason for asking, I am just curious.

Re: Several Fast Bowling Questions

Both Jimmy and Jonesy are on the right track and I am really looking forward to how they develop this line of thought, however Manee, there is little more they can say without seeing your feet. Try to get another video, front on of the whole body for them to analyse.

I will get a video for analysis asap. I promise you. I felt that it would not have been right to get one from my last session, I was so out of sorts - it would not be an accurate depiction of my bowling.

PS: I definately don't do this. This is a masterful sight. The leading leg is in fact the back leg and just shows the perfect jump.
