Watson faces six months out with back injury

Shane Watson could be out of international cricket for up to six months after being diagnosed with stress fractures in his back. Watson's problem has continued the injury crisis for Australia, with Brett Lee set to have foot surgery this week and Andrew Symonds carrying a knee complaint.

Watson is the 12th man at the MCG and he was expected to be in strong contention for the third Test in Sydney to boost Australia's ailing line-up. However, he said he had been playing with a sore back for the past three weeks and regaining full fitness for the Ashes tour is now his primary goal.

"Unfortunately I got diagnosed yesterday with stress fractures in my back," Watson said on the ABC. "It's been over the last month my workload, especially during the Sheffield Shield games I played for Queensland, really spiked.

"My back has been sore for the last three weeks. I knew something wasn't exactly right when bowling in the nets and my back was really sore. Unfortunately it's part and parcel of what I'm trying to do, building up my workload and bowling overs that I wanted to but unfortunately I just went over the edge a little bit too much."

The revelation that the injury-prone Watson carried the problem into the Test series has raised questions of Australia's selectors, who had already been criticised for allowing Symonds to play when he was not fully fit. Watson's best-case scenario would be to return to batting within the next month, although he is unlikely to be able to bowl for at least four months.

"I'm going to have probably four to six weeks rest just to let the fracture heal then start batting, play as a batsman for Queensland, depending on what other games are coming up," Watson said. "Then just build up my bowling again and get things right and hopefully learn from this and hopefully not go to the edge next time and be able to keep bowling for a long period of time.

"[The Ashes is] probably our best point in time from what I've been told already. That's definitely my goal to be able to make sure I'm up and firing before the Ashes so that's my goal as an allrounder."

Re: Shane Watson injured again

I feel for him. He's still young, get fit by the next Ashes tour and launch his assault on getting into the Australian team again.

Have any specialist coaches been developing the next All Rounder?

Not that I know of.

Moises Henriques would have to be the next project player wouldn't he?

Yeah, he's a prospect. No guarantee on him though. His batting has been very disappointing since he has come into the NSW side, and it looks like his technique struggles to cope full outside off stump, a pretty big flaw. It's only something I noticed recently, so hopefully it's just a short-term thing.

He has been pretty effective with the ball though.

One of our best bowlers in India, also has the potential to make big scores with the bat.

Re: Shane Watson injured again

Shane Watson is over weight and always has been. His body would be under too much stress from all the kilograms he is carrying. He needs to slim down if he want's to keep playing cricket.

His challenge is a lot of his weight is muscle but he needs to loose it to survive as an athlete. Most athletes of any sport that have long careers have lean light bodies, especially pace bowlers.

He was one of our best bowlers in india because we had duds playing like brett lee and cameron white and didn't play good bowlers like Bollinger, Siddle and Krajzer.

I would hardly call Brett Lee a dud, he has taken over 300 test wickets? You are a fool if you think he is a dud.

And I read somewhere that in order to prolong his career Shane Watson had stopped weights training and instead took up swimming and such in order to lose a bit of the muscle he has.

That's good news that Watson is looking to lose some weight, it'll do him the world of good.
You are right, Brett Lee isn't a dud but he is a long way past his best and is no longer up to international standard. He was good when he bowled 150/155KM +, but he's lost a lot of his pace and doesn't have the height to gain extra bounce and achieve good seam movement. Siddle is a better option than him, as are Johnson, bollinger and maby Hilfenhaus.
If Lee was tall and could seam and swing the ball both ways he'd be a good player at his pace but he doesn't. He bowls straight with no bounce and a good pace to hit. He also doesn't have a very good cricket brain which is evident of his lack of variation and inability to figure out batsmen and get inside their heads.

Re: Shane Watson injured again

Lee is no longer effective as he can not bowl 150 km/h anymore and I haven't seen him swing the ball in a long time.

Ii is starting to look like a similar decline to Gillespie who could bowl 145 km/h and swing and cut the ball later on he lost pace and could no longer move the ball and batsman found him quite easy to face and eventually he was no longer up to test standard.

Re: Shane Watson injured again

Yeah it is sad to see a player playing top level who is gone and shouldn't be there like Lee and Hayden.

It was great seeing Tate bowl 155km/h in the 20/Twenty last night. Shows what an extra 10km/hr can do. It's a pity Tate can't get more consistancy with his pace and accuracy.

It's a pity he didn't feel the need to bowl that fast in the KFC Big Bash, maybe we would have won a few more games:mad:

Yeah but he only got his wickets because the top order players were concerned of his pace. Once Duminy got out their he played Tait the best espeecially that aweswome six he hit over Ronchi.
