Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

So, the Sheffield Shield comes down to this. Victoria haven't lost a game all season, in fact they have not conceded a point to their opposition since we started way back in October. It is a truly remarkable feat and they will go into the game as strong favourites. However, a lot hangs over the Victorians this summer, they've played in two finals already and threw away both just when they got themselves into a winning position so saying they have to win this final is an understatement.

Queensland have been the second best side for most of the year and have had a bit of a surge in the last few rounds with the exception of round ten in which they played Victoria. The Vics scored over 800 and batted for more than 230 overs in what became a total run-fest at the MCG. It may have been payback for Queensland's effort a few seasons ago where they racked up 900 in the final whilst Victoria spent more than two days in the field.

Queensland have added Daniel Doran to boost the bowling stocks whilst Nick Kruger comes in to prop up the batting. Chris Swan has been cut from the 15-man team. Victoria's squad includes Clint McKay, Shane Harwood and Dirk Nannes who are all returning from injury. The Vics also go in without a specialist spin option and will relt on David Hussey, Cameron White and Brad Hodge as the team's spin options.

The pitch is going to be a batting one which will Suit the Vics as they only need to draw the match in order to win the Sheffield Shield. After scoring 8/806 in the previous game, they'll be confident of doing something similar in this match in order to shut out the Queenslanders.

We should see a good game hopefully, Victoria will go in as favourites but Queensland have been the dark horse and with Symonds, Watson and Hopes playing can't be discounted from giving the Vics a run for their money. Should be a cracker.

Victoria XI: *Cameron White, Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Rob Quiney, Matthew Wade, Damien Wright, Clinton McKay, Shane Harwood, Dirk Nannes, Lloyd Mash (12th man)

Queensland XV: Ryan Broad, Nick Kruger, Martin Love, Shane Watson, Andrew Symonds, Lee Carseldine, James Hopes, +Chris Hartley, *Chris Simpson, Daniel Doran, Ben Cutting, Nathan Rimmington, Ben Laughlin (2 to be omitted)

Umpires: Bruce Oxenford and Paul Reiffel
3rd Umpire: Ian Lock

Weather:

(All Temps in Degrees Celcius)

Friday: Showers and possible storms, 27
Saturday: Possible early thunderstorm, rain easing to showers, 22
Sunday: Shower or two, 19
Monday: Shower or two clearing, 20
Tuesday: Early cloud then fine, 23

Game starts at 11am local time (10am AEST), midnight GMT.

Should be close, I just hope the Vics go for the win at all costs, not the draw.

I don't think getting 900 scored against Victoria 3 years ago had anything to do with batting for so long the other day. It just had to do with keeping Queensland out in the field for long enough to tire them out for the final. can't see Qld taking 20 wickets to win this and with Victoria getting the likes of Nannes, Mckay, Wright and Stickers Harwood back, should win this game comfortably. Qld would be rapt that Siddle, McGain and McDonald are all on tour.

We could see the Vics score a 1000+ in an inns here, there's no way they'll be going for a win at all costs approach, don't get bowled out and win the title will be their approach.

Probably not but it would have been in the back of Cameron White's mind no doubt. If a similar situation occurs in this game, you could almost definitely say it'll be payback.

That's a dangerous approach though. Going into a match with a negative mindset isn't the way to go in my opinion. Perhaps if Victoria tried for the win to start off and then changed their game plan later on would suit them better in going for a draw.

With the weather forecast looking as it is, I don't think winning is going to be a problem for either side really as Saturday looks to be completely written off and Sunday and Monday will see some interruptions.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

There's a bit of rain around here this morning, expecting thunderstorms tonight and rain all day Saturday. Could well be a draw, but the Vics will want to win this with all the history between these two sides in the past 8 years. Qld have beaten Vic in 3 finals and Vic have beaten Qld in 1.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Victoria won the toss and batted. They lost Nick Jewell LBW to Hopes early and then Brad Hodge edged Andrew Symonds to Watson at second slip.

That left them at 2/55 but David Hussey and Chris Rogers have worked hard since then, slowly building up the scoring rate as they go.

2/96 at the moment, Rogers on 47, Hussey 24. 39 overs bowled so a pretty slow scoring rate so far.

Victoria XI: Chris Rogers, Nick Jewell, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, *Cameron White, Rob Quiney, +Matthew Wade, Damien Wright, Clinton McKay, Shane Harwood, Dirk Nannes

Queensland XI: Ryan Broad, Martin Love, Lee Carseldine, Shane Watson, Andrew Symonds, +Chris Hartley, James Hopes, *Chris Simpson, Daniel Doran, Ben Laughlin, Ben Cutting

Martin Love's last game isn't it?
Yes.
Having not conceded a single point all season in this comp and losing the 20 and 50 over finals, Victoria have it all to lose here if they do fail.
Can't see it happening a third time around.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Well, Victoria have slowly asserted their authority, The Rogers/Hussey partnership was finally broken when Rogers inside edged Doran onto his leg and then popped up to Broad at short leg. Rogers was out for a very well made 105.

Since then, Cameron White has come to the crease and further consolidated with Hussey who is gaining some much needed form ahead of the one-day series against South Africa. Hussey is up to 109, White on 16 and the Vics are 3/265 with about eight overs left today. The run rate has finally got up to three runs an over too.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Argh, just as I post that, Hussey walks across his stumps, trying to work Symonds onto the leg side but misses and is out plumb LBW.

Not a good shot with stumps not too far away.

4/265 from 88 overs. Should be eight overs left today.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Hopes again!! Terrible ball down the leg side but Quiney can only glance it to Hartley behind the stumps!

5/272, White on 19 and Nannes sent in the as the nightwatchman. If Queensland can get one more before stumps I would say they'd be in front after day one.

6 for at stumps. honours even. bear in mind Wade is in awesome form and white, well we know what he can do. wait till Queensland bat, then we can see where this game is going. Vic only have to draw, so everything is on QLD to get a result.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Raining bucketloads here in Melbourne. Mightn't even see a ball bowled today.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Gee that's a real shame, was looking like a good contest.

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Personally I dont think the previous finals this year count for anything, the T20 final we were the away side and had already lost to NSW and were severely weakened so hardly favourites and the one dayers can always go either way, winning the toss makes a huge difference at the MCG

QLD crap on about their record against us in Finals, but lets be realistic, the shield losses were all up there, they would have to be bad chokers to lose them and a couple of one dayers where they batted first, main thing is we havent lost a shield final at home

But today shows that maybe playing at the Junktion is a good move :D

Re: Sheffield Shield Final: Victoria vs Queensland at Junction Oval

Day 2 was completely washed out. Victoria are still 6/281 at stumps on day two. No play today puts Queensland well behind the eight ball in terms of winning this contest, they'll have to do all the attacking over the next few days if they want to force a result. Victoria on the other hand will be in no rush.

Yeah, it is a pity, I was thinking of heading down there too.
