Re: somone please explain this

in that mindset, then China should be world champs in every sport, with India not too far behind (based on population).

And also, the US based on sports developement and participants, they should win every world title year after year.

"in that mindset, then China should be world champs in every sport, with India not too far behind (based on population)"

China: population: 1.3 billion. 1.26 billion living in grinding poverty
40 million actively involved with sports

India: population: 1.1 billion. 1.55 billion living in grinding poverty
50 million actively involved with sports

"And also, the US based on sports developement and participants, they should win every world title year after year."

USA: won more Olypmic medals than any other country, more Davis
Cup titles, more world boxing, golf, swimming, sailing titles, on and on.....

Re: somone please explain this

ok, and because the Aussies lost a series to NZ, thats means NZ are better????

Right. Explains the 10% annual economy growth (or even the "conservative" 8%) rate and the hosting of Summer Olympics next year quite well, doesn't it?

India: population: 1.1 billion. 1.55 billion living in grinding poverty
50 million actively involved with sports

The mathematics involved in that statement is so stunning, it deserves an honorary award!!!

Never mind whether the actual numbers themselves have any relationship with the distance between Jupiter and Pluto. Or even that "involved with sport" number would dwarf the entire population of Australia, s-t-r-e-n-g-t-h-e-n-i-n-g (Oh wait, what's the right word? Weakening??) the original argument. That's kind of irrelevant.

Just the pure mathematical prowess of those statements is enough to put any Noble laureate to shame.

Seriously, keep it up! It's stuff like this which is truly adding to the intellectual level of this board.

AND it is so much on topic with the current series.

"Right. Explains the 10% annual economy growth (or even the "conservative" 8%) rate..."

Is that 10% an annual increase in sports achievement or manufacturing
of crap for Walmart?

How many medals will the Chinese win outside of ping-pong?

Re: somone please explain this

China won 32 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals at the Athens Olympics. They were second in most gold medals, behind the USA, and third in most total medals, behind the USA and Australia.

China won medals in a number of sports, including, but not limited to, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, swimming, diving, judo, taekwondo, track and field, and weightlifting.

Re: somone please explain this

The Chinese are only #14 all time in Olympic
medals, behind even Poland and Romania. They rank
#92 in per capita Olympic medals. Still a long, long way
to go for them.

Re: somone please explain this

well considering China has only competed in the Olympics from 1936-1948 and 1984-2004.......... its pretty good

Uhm people said pretty much the same thing after the 2005 Ashes series.

Anyway, I'll give you this much.

Part of OZ's strength in recent times, as with the Windies in days gone by, was psychological. Teams feared the Ozzies and the Ozzies fed on that fear. After their recent Ashes win, even Mikey Holding proclaimed this Oz team to be perhaps the best team ever. Of course with Mikey, you're sure he's going to eat his words sooner or later , so I suppose it was only a matter of time that OZ would suffer a collapse.

Anyway I digress.

The psychological edge OZ had is gone and teams feel they can be beat. Their batting is strong but unless they sort out their bowling attack, they're not gonna make an impression this WC. The bowlers have to do their job to ease pressure off batsmen.

Now yes, the Black Caps took it to them and emerged champions but it's too premature to talk about OZ losing their ground based on that one series. OZ may have a superior system in place to harness talent compared to other countries, but this doesn't mean you can dump younguns in the team and expect them to be matchwinners from the get go. Teams thrive on a certain dynamic..so Gilchrist is the fine wicket keeper/opening batsman who will start things off with a bang, Symmo is the powerful hitter in the lower order and a useful spinner, Ponting is the captain that leads from the front, Glenn McGrath is the metronome that will keep things tight. Brett Lee is supposed to be the quick to intimidate the opposition with pace - just to name a few. If any of the players vital to the team dynamic aren't there..or if they don't play their role, team performance is affected.

So NZ won sure, but they battled a wounded Lion. Is that much to boast about?

I don't think so.

The challenge OZ faces is to develop a team dynamic where their new players can find their comfort zone, know their role, and thus fulfill their potential. That will take some time.
