South Africa gets rid of racial quotas

South African sport has ditched the controversial quota system which demanded a certain number of non-white players in teams.

Makhenkesi Stofile, the sports minister, announced that the focus will switch to helping black athletes by investing upwards of £15 million a year. "Quotas are out," he said. "We are not going to decide who must be on the team. All we are saying is expose everybody, give them an opportunity."

It's good that the stupid quota rules are out. Players should be selected on merit rather than colour. It's important that the whites and non-whites get equal opportunities, but selecting them just to make up the numbers is insane.

It's a good thing if it's true - I'm fully behind selection on merit rather than race. Indeed, in some cases I feel that having positive discrimination can actually worsen relations rather than help integration.

No doubt that this move is, in part, a reply to number of players leaving South African cricket because of the lack of opportunity.

I feel that the quota system was a poor system but it did its job well. Black players have been integrated into the selection process fully and although the system went on for too long, there is now little to no risk whatsoever in my opinion of racism in selections, one way or another.

Like many things it had a place but the world has moved on. I think South Africa will benefit from this change of policy - they can now pick the best XI not the best however many plus the quota numbers.

I'm not sure about this, I think it may lead to less coloured players getting chances.

Cricket is still a white mans game (as is rugby) and other races in South Africa need all the help they can get.

i think its good decision.....in the 2020 world cup vernon philander was only in the team because he is black.....they should give everyone equal chance.....if black cant play well then they cant be in the team..

Seems like a decent call.

I know racial quotas at one time seemed like a good idea but if SA put out an all white team, it isn't racially abusive, its just that the best players are white.

People in this day and age shouldnt be worried about racism, we're all equal and we should be picked on merit of our skills than the colour of our skin.

good that they got rid of it. i think players like loots bosman or philander were just selected due to the quota. prince and ntini are probably the only black players to be selected on merit.

Don't forget that the likes of Gibbs are classified as 'black' in South Africa so he's another one who makes it on merit.

the quota system was really stupid im happy that its no more. maybe now the likes of pietersen would want to return maybe not but we dont need them.
