Starting in cricket...confidence....

Dear all,

So, I am starting in cricket after over a decade away from the game (and even before that I only played the occasional innings). My question is....how long should it be taking for me to pick things up again, and to reach some level of achievement? So far I've had two innings, both of which were ducks, and a net session where I flailed around like a confused four year old.

Now, I can put up with that sort of thing for a while...its only natural when starting again, obviously! But when should I start to look at my making ducks as an indication that I am useless and should try another sport, rather than just an adjustment and learning period? :)

I've booked myself in for an hours coaching at the Oval in a week or so, to get the foundation of technique explained properly (at least the forward defensive!)....but I just want to know how long I should put up with being embarassingly bad!

Cheers,

Matt

Hmmm i myself at the moment am in good form with my batting and im putting it down to the work in the nets for confidence just keep on netting its only natural that eventualy you will improve and by batting in the nets you will gain confidence as you should improve :D

Same deal here.
I played cricket regularly till about 15 yrs back.
Started again this yr, at age 41, the bones get a bit creeky whilst bowling but batting is what I loved, and presently, am often getting out LBW.

I am preplexed why?

I take leg stump gaurd, take full stride forward and am stuck on left leg and am being given out. Can not understand why?

Any thots, if I can try something different. Am thinking of, exposing all stumps, to avoid getting out LBW? Any advice ?

Welcome to the forum, all 3 of you!

To the creator of this thread, well, it's a tough one. I would say give it a season of regular cricket and see how it goes. If you continue to score low, then it may just be that you need to 'drop' down a standard?

The main thing though is to enjoy the game, can be hard when you're getting out for less than 10 per game but the more you put into it, the more you'll get out and ultimately the more you'll enjoy it.

Stick with it lads! As you've all said, it's only natural for it to take time to get back into the game. I took up the sport for the first time last year - and it's only now that I'm starting to get any sort of result. So you guys should have an advantage in that you've got some previous experience. I'd say you have to stick with it for at least one season before you can justify giving up. If you make a genuine effort and it gets you nowhere, then you can think about it, but you'll probably find that within 2 months you'll see some signs of improvement. Especially since you are taking measures to improve.

Bajju: It could just be that you just got a few bad decisions? Certainly at club level with amateur umpires you're going to get a lot of dodgy LBWs. Certainly, if you think you're not out because of getting a stride in - some umpires don't really think of factoring this in. They might just see a straightish ball hitting the pad in line, even though another umpire might have known it would have gone over - or was far enough down to be missing leg.

Maybe at your next practice session you could ask someone to stand at the umpires spot and watch you bat. It could be that the way you play in your head doesn't match how it looks. I know I always think I'm in line with the ball and bringing the bat down straight - but I still get bowled through the gate most weeks ;)

How about playing with your bat as much as possible. Think that you are out if it hits your pads. Wouldn't work for longer formats of the game though. But you can sure try.
