Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

I don't have a horse in this race, but I LOVE to sit back and watch the fireworks. There is not much talk about this here. Come on guys where's da talk? Keep it clean and civil I don't want to get in trouble for being an instigator.

Re: Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

My general disdain for the Australian cricket team makes me want to root for England (that and Monty Panesar you gotta love that celebration), but the fact that Bangladesh's only real chance of making it past the Super 8s (slim I know) is if they jump over England, West Indies, and Ireland makes me want to root for Australia.

Conflicted to say the least.

Thats ok. Most people have a disdain for our team. But we just keep laughing all the way to another cup for the already oversized cabinet.
(that and Monty Panesar you gotta love that celebration),
I actually think he looks like a tool.

Does that mean you think all Sikhs look like tools (in which case you are a moron sir). Or did you mean the celebration (in which case you need a sense of humor).

Ah, there it is. That old chestnut. The old sub-continental persecution complex. Please re read my post and then get back to me when you've come across anywhere I mentioned the word Sikh.

No I don't need a sense of humour, I just think he looks like a tool. Ok? Good.

Re: Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

well Diamond Joe, looks like you got your sledging, just not in regards to the ENG-AUS cricket ;)

Re: Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

Panesar's over the top celebrations drive me bananas. |@

Well, most over the top celebrations drive me bananas. There is no need for it.

English players do it regularly - Flintoff does it regularly, Panesar does it all the time, Brett Lee has a silly over-the-top lawn-mower fist pump or whatever it is he does.

There are others - but those 3 needed a mention.

while you are on the topic of over the top celebrations, i always thought Brett Lee was/is a major offender. I remember the Ashes in England when one was out of reach basically, but he had to do his arms raised thing like he just got the winning scalp.

makes me think he cares more about the stats than the team result.

Re: Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

i think it's one of those things that you get into a habit of doing, so you do it instinctively.

i don't really know, but yeah, without a doubt Brett Lee's is ridiculous, he does a jump in the air a lot too when he takes a wicket. I remember him getting out a No.11 batsman once and he did a jump in the air and he celebrated like it was his first wicket in cricket.

it's just dumb.

One of Flintoff's that comes to mind is his celebration when getting Justin Langer out in the Adelaide test very late on the 2nd day. He was running around, fist-pumping, high-fiving, screaming at the barmy-army and making ugly faces. you'd think they'd just won the closest game of cricket ever played. When i see the footage now i just yell: who won the game you wacko!! i know it's pointless yelling at DVD highlights :p , but it just frustrates me no end

i'm all for a loud woop, and getting together to celebrate, but calm down and get on with the job. You don't see celebrations like that in Baseball even when you have struck out a Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez.

Re: Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

I tend to like the celebrations, actually. I find them entertaining, and they can show a player's enthusiasm for the game. (Even better I suppose would be the way a player celebrates when one of his teammates takes a wicket or makes a really great play in the field.)

Yeah, it looks ridiculous to be celebrating too much when you're losing, but on the other hand, some of the highlights of Flintoff celebrating after taking wickets in the 2005 Ashes were great to watch.

Of course, my favorite player, Murali, has tons of enthusiasm for the game, but hardly does anything except smile when he takes a wicket.

Re: Super 8 - Australia-England PreMatch sledging

Murali's the got the right idea when it comes to celebration.

Smile, small pump of the fist, and then get together with team-mates and smile some more.

Glenn McGrath does it well too, he puts his arms up in the air and does a small fist pump, but he never jumps around hooting and hollering.

Which is where Panesar, Flintoff and Lee (to name a few obviously) go wrong. |@
