Thigh Pain

Hi, i've had this injury for a while now but with my shoulder and back it has become last priority. What it is, is that everytime i bowl....well tbh its only everynow and again when i'm bowling but when i sprint in the field it goes with out fail. I can feel it aswell if i sit down and i let my heel touch the ground. Its fairly painful but not agony and even though it is uncomfortable i can still bowl thorugh it but i can't run very fast after doing it? BASICALLY WHAT DO YOU THINK I'VE DONE AND WHAT SHOULD I DO TO SORT IT OUT? my mate from the representive team has been told to rest because he's tore his quadrecep ??? and what hes describing sounds like mine?

Re: Thigh Pain

It is very possible that you have ruptured one of the quadracep muscles, in which case you know the drill by now phil :D

Do you remember when you first felt the pain:
How long ago?
What you were doing?

Is it your left or right thigh?
Where on the thigh ie far left, mid left, midline, mid right, far right?

Does it feel a little improved than [say] last week?

Re: Thigh Pain

well i know the muscle drill :cursing:

erm.... i did it about at the start of winter nets so feb on my left leg, str8 middle ov my thigh but i used to do it often on my right thigh when i used to play football, so i ad to give football up, so i think it might be down to how i run--- my dad says i run from my knees and not my hips so he says i run like a wally --- so it could be my running.... when im relaxing its fine and its usually fine after say 2 hours after a game but it is always the same intensity of pain during the games

Re: Thigh Pain

At least your Dad didn't say you run like a girl

You will probably find that you suffer weak gluteus medius/minimus and need to build these up. I strongly suggest you get your running biomechanics sorted.

Do you properly warm up these large muscle groups prior to activity?

Do you get muscle spasms/cramps in this area during activity?

Re: Thigh Pain

:embarrassed: kinda late really i've started 2 warm them up since they started 2 hurt
i get cramp there sometimes but i get more spasm at the back of my leg in the samish place but on the back

Stretch your quads and hams everyday, especially until recovery.

Lightly massage some sports balm into your quads before activity and keep the intensity low for a while.

Re: Thigh Pain

Stretching the Quadriceps

Stand feet, parallel and together.
Brace your core to find your balance.
Raise one heel to your buttock.
Hold the raised ankle with your hand [same side].
Make sure your knees are together and there is no gap between your inner thighs.
Keep your chest up.

Hold the stretch for 10 secs.
Increase the stretch and hold for another 10 secs.
Increase the stretch and hold for another 10 secs.

If you need to increase this stretch more, push your knee directly behind you whilst still keeping upright.
This also stretches the hip flexors.

Repeat with the other leg.
This is the strech that really hurts me when i do it :eek:hmy: it must be that muscle because i can only get it about 3 inches from my buttocks

Re: Thigh Pain

OK phil, it sounds like a strain of the rectus femoris. I am assuming this is a dull ache and not a sharp pain.

This usually requires between 1 to 4 weeks rest from training, depending on the extent of the injury.

Muscle imbalances between the quads and the hams are quite often to blame and so is foot imbalance.

Other than R.I.C.E and ibuprofen, gentle stretches of the quads will help. Sports orthotics/insoles will speed up recovery and a thigh support will help.

Retro running is usually prescribed; walking or running backwards. As always, start slowly and gently, progressing to a jog.

Cycling will strengthen the quads.
