Wonder how WC attendance is going. Still see rows and rows
of empty seats on all the Cricinfo photos, even in matches
between full members.

Since you've never seen a WC tournament, there are usually rows upon rows of empty seats in the group stage matches. Things pick up for the super eights and semis of course.

Dehring and Co really screwed things up this world cup. I've read your ideas on how this could have been addressed, for instance promoting the game to the American tourists, a bad idea IMO since most Americans are largely ignorant about the game. The people Dehring should have targeted are the locals. West Indians are very passionate - dare I say the most passionate - fans of cricket. They still follow it to this day inspite of the many failures of the Windies team and the WICB dragging its feet when it comes to developing the sport.

So please keep in mind...

1) Locals have been priced out of this WC. The prices for the Group Stage matches should have been slashed in half to generate interest in these games.

2) We're seeing some school kids but not enough which sugests either these schools couldn't fit the bill or not enough was done to promote these games in various educational institutions. Deals for primary schools and secondary schools would have been great since many of these matches take place during working hours.

3)Incredibly stupid restrictions on what you can and cannot carry into the various stadia. Which leads me to think they were never interested in making this a Caribbean world cup, with passionate West Indian fans cheering on for good cricket...but were aiming for tourists....which leads me to my fourth point..

4)...Rushing foreigners by claiming they need to book their flights and hotel accommodations early. Clearly there was little or no analysis of projected visitors to the islands for the World Cup. Add to that the PR disaster of the Visa Requirements - which I have no problem with per se - but I'm sure the poor organization and the slow process to attain these visas resulted in many foreign fans of the game being turned off and preferring to watch the games in the comfort of their living rooms.

The ICC will hardly be bothered by this financially since the bulk of their profits will be from broadcast sales. The islands that relied on foreign investment, with the exception of Trinidad perhaps, will not reap the rewards of refurbishing these stadia for the games leaving these governments in serious debt. I really hope we see bigger crowds as the tournament progresses but Dehring and Co. have already mucked this up big time.

I hope my post was so enlightening you won't repeat yourself over and over, thread after thread, about empty seats since what's done is done. Can't be reversed now, all we can do is hope for a great WC.

Re: excitement in stands; not at turnstiles

Good post Sunstroke, you've confirmed what is also being reported here locally. However I don't this will stop Timmy, he will still find something to gripe about.

"promoting the game to the American tourists, a bad idea IMO since most Americans are largely ignorant about the game."

Did you, or anyone else, come out of the womb knowing cricket? You
learn it by wathcing it in an understanding setting.

"Incredibly stupid restrictions on what you can and cannot carry into the various stadia"

Can thank Dimebag W for this. In his anti-terrorist paranoia he talked
Dehring into thinking Bin Laden was gonna plant a bomb under every seat of every stadium.

"Add to that the PR disaster of the Visa Requirements"

The Visa restrictions only applied to a few countries, NOT North Americans.
Why aren't they in the stands?

"The islands that relied on foreign investment, with the exception of Trinidad perhaps, will not reap the rewards of refurbishing these stadia for the games leaving these governments in serious debt."

...exactly as I predicted.

When I was born I knew more than you.

No you can thank Dehring for sucking up to the ICC instead of defending his own. Those regulations were NOT needed.

I love the idea of promoting cricket but for the umpteenth time there is already a wealth of cricket savvy people living in the Caribbean ....They did not make these games attractive to locals....their loss..

I see you missed the part about the usual poor showing in group stages of the cricket world cup....

....but I know I catch your mid stump on that one.

...exactly as I predicted.

Nothing special, I predicted it too so did many in the Caribbean.

Re: Timmy and His Wonderful Thoughts

But what I would really like to know is, why aren't there many Nigerians in attendance at NFL matches? This is an issue in which NFL is getting seriously failing marks.

Also why aren't the Nepali citizen being targetted by AFL, the organization down in Australia for growing their sport?

Seriously, these conversations remind me of some Thanksgiving dinners when there is always that one senile uncle sitting in the corner. He keeps asking for more stuffing and corn, muttering irrelevant comments about "the Jews" or something like that. Nobody really pays attention to him as they've learnt to tune him out, but have to put up with his presence year after year each Thanksgiving.

Re: Timmy and His Wonderful Thoughts

that's where we in Australia are lucky: we don't celebrate thanksgiving :p

Just substitute for a senile uncle you meet every year on Anzac day. You guys do have an annual family gathering tradition for Anzac day over there, don't you? :p

No, we don't.

Re: Timmy and His Wonderful Thoughts

you don't get together?

heck i'm in the wrong family then.

we all get together and watch the footy

none of us support Essendon or Collingwood, but we all get together and watch it.

They're all too busy running internet scams on the Yanks.

Nup, it's just another public hoilday. We all might watch the ANZAC Day match together but that's about it. No special dinner or anything like that.

Re: Timmy and His Wonderful Thoughts

our day starts off generally "lunch - then footy"

it turns into

  • lunch
  • footy
  • tea
  • supper
  • 11:00pm finish

but the senile old uncle generally never appears, it's generally the senile old grandmother, who goes on about not much.

not being rude grandmother :p
