To walk or not to walk?

Having just seen Sangakkara walk for an edge that nobody appealed for, what are your views on walking?

I tend to think that the umpires are there to do a job and you should let them decide whether you're out or not. Of course you get the odd reflex walk when you know you've hit it and just go but generally I stand my ground and wait for the finger.

We have had various players speaking out on the issue, including the Glichrist crusade which has lead to a few on the field arguments when he's felt someone should have walked but stayed. Surely, though with careers sometimes on the line a player has the right to wait for the umpire to decide?

nah i wouldnt walk unless i needed to take a leak :p.you can walk if you want when the ump gives a bad decision in our favour but if the umpire gives a bad decision against you then you cant decide to stay.so its best to leave it to the umpire.

Depends on the situation, best to walk quite alot on decisions that you'll get given on as if it gets amongst the umpires your a walker there less likely to give you out on marginal decisions ;).

Depends :p

As captain from under 12's to under 17's i give quite a few Umps a bit of stick and they tend to remember me, so margional goes the oppositions way with me :laugh:

The umpires get paid to do the do the job if they don't hear a nick it's their fault in my opinion.

Talking of walking, played a game today for college, 2nd Years (Me) Vs. 1st years, Our vice captain walked, to a faint nick, i saw it as i was batting, but the keeper didnt notice it, neither did the bowler, stupid boy!

I don't know about these guys, but I can't play after I've been out once. There is a guilty feeling that gets to me. Players should walk if they are sure, if they are not than its the umpires decision, thats why we have an umpire.

would a player walk if his team requires 20 runs to win and hes the last batsman? i dont think so. if hes a walker then people could critisize him and accuse him of cheating. so why walk when the umpire is out there to make the decision.

Even if nobody has appealed, if you are out, you should walk. The bowlers have it hard enough as it is. If I had known I was out and stayed there, it just wouldn't feel right.

But if luck is with you, why?

It evens out in the end really, you'll get some shocking decisions, but you know that somewhere down the line you'll get a decision go your way, so why say no to that?

Rob Key said on the TV coverage recently that he will start walking as soon as a captain calls him back after an umpiring error.

That said, Michael Holding says that you always walk when you hit it straight to mid off, so why don't you walk when edging it to the keeper?

i dont agree with what holding said. if the umpire makes an error in judgement it can go either way, when it comes your way then its best to grab the opportunity. you may think its cheating but wont you think the same if the ump wrongly gives you out?

after the last india vs australia match murali kartik admitted he nicked one and india were very close to victory then. if he walked then then india could have lost the match. i dont think any batsman will walk in such a situation so why should they walk in other situations.
