Massive loss to the game, the summer of commentary without him will sure be different. As a player I knew he was supposed to be good but just looking at his record it was actually very good with a Test batting average of 40 and bowling at 32, underrated in that regard by the looks of it.

Shocked and saddened to hear this news. He did a wonderful job as a cricketer and later on a commentator. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

I am truly privileged to have worked* beside the man in the commentary box, even for just three games. See him only on TV prior to then, it never really occurred me just how imposing a figure he was, but he was welcoming enough. I wish I told him I was Sri Lankan -- I can only imagine our subsequent conversations. The balance he brought to the Channel 9 commentary box was vital, especially since Nine no longer invites touring commentators into the box. His presence this season was sorely missed.

* as an electronic scorer, not a commentator!
